　昔々（むかしむかし）のお話（はなし）です。ある晩（ばん）、ひとりの男（おとこ）が海岸（かいがん）を歩（ある）いていると、綺麗（きれい）な人魚（にんぎょ）に出会（であ）いました。

Once upon a time, a man was walking along the seaside at midnight when he met a mermaid.

　人魚は、大（おお）きな岩（いわ）に腰（こし）かけて、月（つき）を眺（なが）めていました。

The mermaid was sitting on a large rock, looking at the moon.

　男が人魚の美（うつく）しさに見（み）とれていると、人魚は男のほうを向（む）いて微笑（ほほえ）みました。

As the man admired her beauty, she turned to him and smiled.

　男はふらふらと人魚へ近（ちか）づき、その隣（となり）に座（すわ）りました。

He went towards her as if he were being sucked in and sat down next to her.

　男が住（す）んでいる村（むら）では、人魚はとっておきのごちそうです。

For the people in the village where the man lives, mermaids are a precious foodstuff.

　もしも誰（だれ）かが人魚を見つけたら、村のみんなで食（た）べることに決（き）まっています。

If they find a mermaid, they are determined to catch it and eat it with everyone in the village.

　もちろん、男はわかっていました。しかし、初（はじ）めて見た人魚は、想像（そうぞう）していたよりもずっと美しく、捕（つか）まえてしまおうとは思（おも）えませんでした。

Naturally, he understood this. But when he actually saw the mermaid, he had no desire to catch her at all, he just felt that she was too beautiful.

　男は、自分（じぶん）の住んでいる村の景色（けしき）を、人魚に語（かた）って聞（き）かせました。

The man told the mermaid about the view of his village.

　澄（す）んだ小川（おがわ）の流（なが）れや、愛（あい）らしい色（いろ）の花（はな）が咲（さ）く丘（おか）、そこにそびえる大きな風車（ふうしゃ）。

The clear stream running through the village, the hills with lovely coloured flowers and the big windmill there.

　人魚はうっとりしてその話に耳（みみ）を傾（かたむ）けていました。

She was entranced and listened to his story.

　そして「ぜひ、そこへ行（い）ってみたいわ」と言（い）いました。

Then she said, "Please take me to your village."

　男はあわてました。村のみんなに人魚が見つかったら、食べられてしまいます。

He was flustered. If other villagers find her, she will surely be eaten.

　男は「危（あぶ）なくっていけないよ」と言いました。

He said to her, "It is very dangerous for you."

　しかし、人魚は村の景色を見たがって聞きませんでした。

But she insisted on seeing the village scenery.

　しかたがないので、男は人魚を連（つ）れていってやることにしました。

Having no choice, he decided to take her to his village.

　抱（だ）き上（あ）げた人魚の体（からだ）はひどく軽（かる）く、男はびっくりしました。

When he picked up her, he was surprised at how light she was.

「まるで、いないようなものじゃないか」と男は言いました。

"It's as if you don't exist," he said.

「わたしはね、本当（ほんとう）にはいなくならないのよ」と人魚は笑（わら）いました。

"The mermaid can never truly be lost," she laughed.

　男は、人魚を抱きかかえて、真夜中（まよなか）の村を歩きました。

The man walked through the village at midnight with the mermaid in his arms.

　ふたりは、月の光（ひかり）にきらめく小川の水面（みなも）や、風車の陰（かげ）で夜露（よつゆ）に濡（ぬ）れる花びらを見てまわりました。

They looked around at the streams shimmering in the moonlight and the petals wet with night dew in the shade of the windmills.

　夢（ゆめ）のようなひとときを楽（たの）しんだふたりでしたが、男の家（いえ）の近くまでやってきたとき、ひとりの若（わか）い村人（むらびと）に出くわしてしまいました。

They had a very wonderful time. But, when they came near his house, they came across a young villager.

　その村人は、男を見て「人魚を捕まえたのか？」と言いました。

The villager said to him, "You caught a mermaid?"

「いい人魚じゃないか。よくやった！」

"This is a very nice mermaid. Well done, you!"

　そして、その村人はさっそく他（ほか）の村人たちを呼（よ）んできました。

And, the villager immediately called the other villagers.

　村人たちは口々（くちぐち）に男を褒（ほ）め、人魚を見て舌（した）なめずりしました。

They praised the man and looked expectantly at the mermaid.

　男はあせりました。「捕まえてきたわけじゃないんだ」

The man panicked and said, "I didn't bring her here to eat her."

　しかし村人たちは聞く耳を持（も）たず、すぐに男から人魚を取（と）り上げました。

But the villagers did not listen to him. They quickly took the mermaid away from him.

　男は人魚を取り返（かえ）そうとしましたが、力（ちから）の強（つよ）い村人たちに邪魔（じゃま）されてしまいました。

He tried to bring her back, but the powerful male villagers prevented him from doing so.

　目（め）を覚（さ）ますと、男は自分（じぶん）の家のベッドに横（よこ）たわっていました。

When the man woke up, he was lying in his bed in his own house.

　あちこちにひどいけがをしているようで、起（お）き上がろうとすると全身（ぜんしん）が痛（いた）みました。

He tried to get up, his whole body ached. He seemed to be badly injured here and there.

　ひとりの老（お）いた村人が、彼のそばで手当（てあ）てをしてくれていました。

An old blind villager was by his side, tending to him.

「人魚はどうした？」と男は言いました。

"What did those villagers do to the mermaid?" The man said.

　しかしその村人は答（こた）えずに、こう言いました。

But the villager did not answer his question.

「あなたは昨日（きのう）の晩、磯（いそ）で転（ころ）んで海（うみ）に落（お）ちたのですよ。それでそんなに大けがをして、今（いま）まで眠（ねむ）っていたのです」

"You fell on the shore last night and fell into the sea. That's how you got hurt so badly and slept until now."

「人魚はどうしたんだ？」と男はまた言いました。

"What did those villagers do to the mermaid?" The man said again.

　けれども村人は「なんのことでしょうかね。夢を見ていたんじゃあないですか」と言うばかりでした。

"I do not know what you are talking about. Perhaps you were dreaming." That was all the villager said.

　男には、あの人魚の姿（すがた）が夢だったとはちっとも信（しん）じられませんでした。

But the man could not believe it. He couldn't believe that the mermaid had been a dream.

　男は痛む体を引（ひ）きずってベッドから降（お）りました。

He got out of bed. He felt great pain all over his body.

　村人は男を止（と）めようとしましたが、男は家を飛（と）び出（だ）しました。

The villager tried to stop him, but he ran out of the house.

　男の頭（あたま）には、人魚のことだけしかありませんでした。

All he could think about was the mermaid.

　奇妙（きみょう）なことに、外（そと）には人（ひと）の姿がまるでありませんでした。

Strangely, the village was practically devoid of people.

　空（そら）はよく晴（は）れてとても明（あか）るかったのですが、どの家を訪（たず）ねてみても誰もいませんでした。

The sky was clear and very bright, but there was nobody. When the man visited every house, no one was there.

　男は人魚を探（さが）して村を駆（か）けまわり、最後（さいご）に村長（そんちょう）の家の前（まえ）へやってきました。

He ran around the village looking for the mermaid. He finally reached the village headman's house.

　中（なか）からは、村人たちの楽しそうな声（こえ）がかすかに聞こえてきていました。

From inside the house he could faintly hear the joyful laughter of the villagers.

　どうやら、みんなここに集（あつ）まっているようでした。男は扉（とびら）を開（あ）けました。

It seemed that everyone had gathered there. He opened the door of the house.

　そこでは豪華（ごうか）な宴会（えんかい）が行（おこな）われていました。

A lavish party was held there.

　部屋（へや）の真（ま）ん中には大きな食卓（しょくたく）があり、その上（うえ）には色とりどりのごちそうが並（なら）んでいました。

There was a large table in the centre of the room with various feasts on it.

　とてもおいしそうに見えるそのごちそうは、すべて人魚の肉（にく）で作（つく）られたものでした。

They all looked very tasty. Yes, they were all made of the mermaid meat.

　人魚はすでにすっかり解体（かいたい）されていました。

She had already been completely dismantled.

　男は、はしゃぐ村人たちを押（お）しのけて、奥（おく）の炊事場（すいじば）へ入（はい）りました。

The man waded through the throngs of the villagers and entered the kitchen at the back.

　人魚の頭だけが、調理台（ちょうりだい）の上に置（お）かれていました。

Only the parts of her that could not be eaten, from the neck up, were left on the kitchen table.

　それを見た瞬間（しゅんかん）、男は大きな声で泣（な）き出しました。

The moment he saw it, he cried out loud.

　人魚の頭をかかえて外へ出た男は、傾き始（はじ）めた太陽（たいよう）を背（せ）に、泣きじゃくりながらゆっくりと歩いていきました。

The man took it in his arms and went outside. The sun was beginning to set. He walked slowly. He wept and moaned all the way.

　やがて男は海に辿（たど）りつきました。

Eventually he reached the sea.

　大きな夕日（ゆうひ）が水面に反射（はんしゃ）して、とてもまぶしく輝（かがや）いていました。

The big sunset was reflecting off the water and he felt very dazzled.

　打（う）ち寄（よ）せる波（なみ）のすぐそばで、男は膝（ひざ）をつきました。

He went right up to the lapping waves and kneeled on the ground.

　ふと、かすかな風（かぜ）が吹（ふ）き、人魚の髪（かみ）がわずかになびきました。

Suddenly a slight breeze blew and the hair of the mermaid he was holding fluttered a little.

　そのとき、不思議（ふしぎ）なことが起こりました。

Then something wondrous happened.

　髪の毛（け）の先（さき）が海水（かいすい）に触（ふ）れたとたん、人魚はもとの美しい姿に戻（もど）ったのです。

When the ends of her hair touched the seawater, she instantly returned to her original beautiful appearance.

「ああ、よかった！」男は喜（よろこ）びました。

"Incredible!" He shouted and was delighted.

「君（きみ）がいなくならなくて本当によかった。あいつらがひどいことをしたね。すまなかった」

"It's really good to see you again. I'm sorry for the terrible things the villagers did to you."

　人魚はそっと海のほうへ顔（かお）を向けました。

She gently turned towards the sea.

「いいのよ、あなたはとってもすばらしい世界（せかい）を見せてくれたわ。わたしのための世界では、なかったけれど」

"No, it doesn't matter, the scenery you showed me was wonderful. It was a beautiful world, for you."

　男は人魚を抱きしめようとしましたが、彼女はするりと身（み）をひるがえし、悲（かな）しげに微笑みました。

He tried to hug her, but she ducked and smiled sadly.

　それから、人魚は静（しず）かに海へ帰（かえ）っていき、二度（にど）とは現（あらわ）れませんでした。

She then quietly returned to the sea, never to be seen again.
