第6話 予期せぬ来客 An Unexpected Guest

　世津奈とコータローが部屋を出るとすぐ、アオイがアイマスクを差し出してきた。「悪いけど」とアオイが言い、コータローはうなり、世津奈は微笑み、二人ともマスクをつけた。二人はアオイに導かれて外に出た。

「このクルマ、セダンだから大人5人には狭い。世津奈さん、後部座席の真ん中に乗って。博士とコータローは両端」

「私が一番ちっちゃいからね」とアオイは呟く。

全員が席につき、池辺が車を発進させた。

　クルマは狭い生活道路を5分ほど走って、片道3車線の幹線道路に入った。池辺はクルマに中央車線を走らせた。

「なんか、音楽聴く？」と世津奈が声をかけると、コータローが「なにがあるんすか？」と乗ってきた。

世津奈が「いいアイディアじゃないわ。外の音に耳を澄ましていた方が安全」と言い、池辺も「その通り」と言った。

　アオイは助手席で退屈していた。チードル博士が発信機をつけられていないことと、隠れ家まで尾行されなかったことは確認されていた。つまり、もう、邪魔者は現れない。そして、運転は池辺の仕事だ。

――あたしは任務完了だよ。

そう思うと、眠くなってくる。

　アオイが昼寝に入ろうとした、その時、フロントガラス前方の空中に、突然黒い物体が現れた。その物体は見る見る迫って来て、フロントガラスにぶつかりそうになる。アオイは頭を下げた。頭の上で奇妙な音がした。

　アオイが顔を上げると、池辺の正面のフロントガラス外面に大人の頭くらいの黒いシミがついていた。

「ドローンからペイントを浴びせられた。これじゃ、前が見えない」

　と池辺がうなる。池辺の手がワイパーのスイッチに伸び、それをアオイは止めようとしたが遅かった。ワイパーが動き出し、シミは落ちるどころか、フロントガラスいっぱいに広がった。

「まじぃ。アオイ、窓をあけて顔をだしてクルマがまっすぐ走ってるか確かめろ」

池辺も運転席のサイドウィンドウを開けて、顔を出す。

「非常事態ですね。アイマスクを外しますよ」

後部座席から世津奈の落ち着いた声が聞こえてきた。

「あぁ、自分のことは自分で何とかしてくれ」

　と池辺が答える。

アオイは、他人の危険に触れる時の池辺は実に投げやりに聞こえると、いつも感じていた。

――この人間性の欠陥を治す方法はないな。

　池辺は、後ろから肩をつかまれた。

「頭をひっこめて！」

世津奈が叫ぶ声。ちらと後ろを見ると、大型トラックが後ろから迫ってくる。悲鳴を上げて池辺は頭をひっこめた。

大型トラックが横付けして側面をぶつけてきた。

As soon as Setsuna and Kohta got out of the room, Aoi handed them eye-masks.

"Sorry," Aoi said. Kohta groaned, Setsuna smiled, then the two put on the masks.

They went outside under Aoi's guide.

"The car is a sedan. Narrow for 5 adults. Setsuna, please sit in the middle of the rear seat."

"Because I'm the smallest."murmured Setsuna.

All seated, Ikebe started the car.

The car went through narrow roads amid a residential quarter for about 5 minutes then entered a highway with 3 lanes each direction. Ikebe drove the car along the center lane.

"You want some music?" Aoi asked and Kohta replied "What do you have?"

Setsuna said "I don't think it's a good idea. We'd better listen for a sound outside." and Ikebe said "Agreed."

Aoi was bored in the assistant driver's seat. It was confirmed Dr. Cheadle was not had hold any transmitters. It was also confirmed SHELTER's cars were not followed on their way to the hideout. That means there would be no more interference. And driving is Ikebe's job.

――My mission's completed.

Aoi thought and felt sleepy.

When Aoi was to take a nap, a black object popped up in the sky outside the front glass. It was closing in on and got about to crush the front window. Aoi bowed her head. She heard a strange sound above.

Aoi raised her head. There was a black stain over the front window just in front of Ikebe. The stain was the size of an adult's head.

"Shoot! A drone splashed black paint on the front glass. I can' t see through the window."

Ikebe touched the wiper switch. Aoi tried to stop him, but too late. The wipers started and, far from erasing the stain, they spread the paint all over the window.

"Oh shit! Aoi, open the side window. Put your head out. See if the car's going straight."

Ikebe also opened the side window of the driver's seat and put out his head.

"An emergency, right? I'm taking off my eye-mask.

Setsuna's calm voice came from the rear seat.

"Yeah, I'm too busy. Protect yourself."

Aoi always felt Ikebe sounded very irresponsible when it came to talking about the dangers of other people.

――I don't think there is any remedy for this flaw of his humanity.

Ikebe was slapped on his shoulder.

"Pull in your head!"

Setsuna cried out from the rear seat. Ikebe turned and saw a large truck closing in on him. Screaming, he took his head in.

A large truck came alongside the sedan and bumped its side against the the sedan's side.
