第5話 身柄の移管 Handing over Dr. Cheadle

　世津奈とコータローは、窓のない狭い部屋で折り畳みイスに腰かけ「Ｍ」が来るのを待っていた。

「ずいぶん待たせますね」

コータローが散弾銃を装填しなおしながら言う。退屈なのかじれているのか、コータローは、この30分ほどの間に20回ほど、弾を抜いては込め直している。

「『Ｍ』さんたちは、色々とチードル博士に訊くことがあるんでしょ。それより、コー君、あんまり装填し直してると、中の機構が痛んで本番で撃てなくなるわよ」

「ひえっ」と言って、コータローがショットガンを床に落とす。

「そういう乱暴な扱いは、もっと危ない」

　と世津奈に言われて、コータローが慌ててショットガンを取り上げ胸に抱える。

　世津奈は３5歳。穏やかで人を包み込むたたずまいをしているが、狙った獲物は逃さない優秀なスパイ・ハンターだ。3年前までは警視庁で産業スパイを追っていた。

　身長155センチと小柄だが、スラっとして手脚が長いので見た目にはもっと背が高く見える。小柄・細身でも、骨太・筋肉質で腕力が強い。容貌は美人と言う人間もいれば、普通と言う人間もいるというレベル。

　コータローは28歳。知的な容貌に黒いセルのメガネをかけ、学者肌に見える。実際、5年前までは一流大学の博士課程で数理経済学を専攻していた。そこで深刻なアカデミックハラスメントに遭い退学して家で引きこもっているところを、伯母であり「京橋テクノサービス」の社長である高山ミレによって、半ば強引に調査員にされた。身長が185センチあるので、つねに世津奈を見下ろす形で話すことになる。容貌は、かなりハンサムな方だ。

　ドアにノックの音がし、世津奈が「どうぞ」と答えると、「Ｍ」が入ってきた。

「お待たせしました。チードル博士から色々話を聞きました。『シェルター』と話し合った上で、高山社長とも話しました」

「それで、結論は？」

とコータローがせっつく。

「『シェルター』はチードル博士を保護しません。彼は、ゾンビのような人間達を操っている黒幕と闘いたいそうです」

「Ｍ」が言う。

「『シェルター』は悪の組織に追われる善良な個人をかくまい守るのが使命で、その個人が組織に反撃するのを助けることはしないのでしたね」

　と世津奈が返し、「Ｍ」がうなずく。

「高山社長は、チードル博士があなた達の調査に関連する重要な情報を持っている可能性が高いと言っています。そこで、チードル博士をあなた方に引き渡すことで高山社長と合意しました」

「Ｍ」が言う。

　予想通りの展開だと世津奈は思う。

「この隠れ家の場所はあなた達にもお教えするわけにいかないので、私たちのクルマで、チードル博士とあなた達を『京橋テクノサービス』までお送りします」

「尾行されないように気を付けてくださいよ」

　と、コータローが言わなくてもよいことを言う。

「よろしくお願いします」

　と言って、世津奈はていねいに頭を下げた。

Setsuna and Kohta were waiting for ”Ｍ” to show up. They were sitting on fold-flat chairs in a small room with no windows.

"Why does "M" keep us waiting this long."

said Kohta reloading his shotgun. Because he may be boring or irritated, he has unloaded and loaded his shotgun for 20 times for the last 30 minutes.

"She must have been asking Dr. Cheadle many questions. By the way, if you repeat reloading your shotgun too many times, its inside mechanism gets worn out it won't work when you face our enemy."

"What!"

Kohta was surprised ans dropped his gun on the floor.

"Such rough treatment is more prone to destroy the gun."

said Setsuna. Khota picked up his gun and held it in his arms.

Setsuna, 35 years old, had calm and receptive mood. Contrary to her gentle appearance, she was a fierce industrial-spy hunter. Up to 3 years ago, she was a police woman chasing industrial spies. As for her looks, some said she was beautiful and some said she was just ordinary.

She was 155 centimeter high, small for the current day Japanese women. But, her slender body and long arms and legs made her look taller than she really was. Though short and slender, she was built of tough bones and dense muscles and had great physical strength.

Kohta was 28 years old. In his intelligent appearance with black cell glasses, he looked like a scholar. Actually, up until 5 years ago, he was in a doctor's course in mathematical economics at one of the best universities in Japan. There, he faced severe academic harassment and dropped out. He got in a state of social withdrawal, shutting himself in his small apartment room. His aunt, Myret Takayama, CEO of "Kyobashi Techno Service" pulled him out and made him an investigator. He was 185 centimeter high, then, when talking to Setsuna, he always looked down on her. He was fairly handsome.

There was a knock on the door. Setsuna answered "Please come in."

"M" entered the room.

"Sorry to have kept you waiting It took a while to hear from Dr. Cheadle.Then, I talked with both SHELTER and the CEO of your firm."

"So, what is the conclusion?"

Khota wanted to know the result hurriedly.

"SHELTER will not protect Dr. Cheadle because he wants to fight against the mastermind of the zombie-like people."

"M" said.

"SHELTER's mission is to gives shelter to and protect a just individual persecuted by an evil organizations but not to help her/him fight back."

replied Setsuna. "Ｍ” nodded.

"CEO Takayama said Dr. Cheadle is very likely to have information helpful to your investigations. Therefore, we agreed Dr. Cheadle will be handed over to you."

said "M."

Setsuna thought this proceedings was as she had expected.

"We cannot disclose the location of this hideout even to you. Therefore, our car will bring Mr. Cheadle and you to "Kyobashi Techno Service."

"Make sure that we will not be followed by hostile forces."

Kohta said things that needn't be said.

" Thank you for your consideration. I trust you."

Setsuna made respectful obeisance to "M."
