The Sun and Stars

Nighthawk flew back home crying. The short summer night was coming to an end.

The fern leaves, sucked up the dawn fog, and swung in the cold blue air. Nighthawk squeaked up high. And then started to tidy up his nest, grooms his feathers from top to bottom, and flew out from his nest again.

The fog cleared, the Sun rose up in the East. Nighthawk was flying towards the Sun, but because the Sun was too bright, he started to feel dizzy but pushed himself to fly up, and flew right to where the Sun is like an arrow.

“Mr. Sun, Mr. Sun. Please take me to you. I don’t care if I burn to death. Even my ugly body will make a small light when I die. Please take me there.”

He flew and flew, but couldn’t reach the Sun. The Sun was getting smaller and smaller and from far away the Sun said:

“You are the Nighthawk, aren’t you? I see, it’s very harsh isn’t it? Fly the sky again, and ask the night Stars the same thing. Because you are not a day time bird.”

Nighthawk thought that he bowed once, but suddenly lost his control and fell down on top of the field of grass. It felt like he was in a dream. He saw his body rising up between the red and yellow Stars, he saw himself blown forever by the wind, and saw himself captured in Hawk’s sharp talons.

Something cold suddenly dropped on his face. Nighthawk opened his eyes. A dew dropped from a young pampas grass. It was already night, and the sky was dark blue, with thousands of stars twinkling all around. Nighthawk flew up into the night sky. The mountain fire was again red tonight. Nighthawk flew around the glimmer from the fire, and in the cold starlight. As he flew up high again flew straight to the West sky where that beautiful Star of Orion is and shouted as he flew:

“Mr. Star. The pale blue Star on the West. Please take me where you are. I don’t care if I burn to death.”

Orion kept on singing his brave and powerful songs that he didn’t care about Nighthawk. Nighthawk was about to cry. He fell down slowly, but took off again and flew up the night sky once more. Then, he flew straight to the south where the Great Dog Cain’s Major is and shouted.

“Mr. Star. The blue Star on the South. Please take me where you are. I don’t care if I burn to death.”

Canis Major twinkled blue, purple, and yellow beautifully and answered.

“Are you an idiot? Look who you are. You’re just a bird. Coming here with your wings will take billions and trillions and billion trillion of years.” And turned away.

Nighthawk lost his heart, slowly started to fall, and then flew up again. He pushed himself to fly straight to the North where the Big Dipper is and shouted.

“Sir, the blue Star in the North, please take me where you are.”

The Great Dipper said quietly:

“You should not think of such a useless thing. Cool down a little. In this case, the best thing to do, is to dive into the ocean filled with icebergs, or if you don’t have an ocean near, dive into a cup filled with ice water.”

Nighthawk broke his heart, slowly he started to fall down, and then again, flew around the sky for the fourth time. Once again, he flew to the east, towards the Aquila on the far bank of Milky Way that just rose.

“Sir, the White Star on the East, please take me where you are. I don’t care if I burn to death.”

Aquila arrogantly said:

“No no, that will never happen. To be a Star, you need to be in a high rank. You also need lots of money.”

Nighthawk completely lost hope, closed his wings, and started to fall down to the ground. And when his weak legs almost touched the ground, Nighthawk suddenly flew up to the sky. When he came to the middle of the sky, Nighthawk shook his body and bristled, as eagles do when they attack bears. Then he squeaked loudly. His voice was just like Hawk’s. The birds that were asleep in the fields and the woods, all woke up, shivered, and dubiously looked up at the starry sky.
