If she was upset about almost drowning she might not remember what she said when he pulled her out of the water, and more than likely she didn't mean it, she would have been upset with her clothes all wet not wanting to be seen by a boy, and his hands might have bothered her, but no matter what was said it really upset Arima so much so that he is afraid of touching girls or helping them, that might have been why he started exercising, to lose weight, after that incident Atami-san started exercising, so that she wouldn't need to be helped again, and she could help others.
