12. Invitation to the truth １２ 真相への誘い

　だが噂の真相について宮原は三枝に尋ねてみようとは思っている。

　宮原が三枝と知り合ったのは、まだ若い宮原が政治関連のスキャンダルを追いかけていたときだ。三枝が自分のどこを気に入ったのか宮原には想像できないが、経験的に世間にはそういった出会いがあることは知っている。それ以来付かず離れずの関係を続けて来たが、今回の奇妙な復帰での繋がりが宮原には偶然のことのようには思えない。もっとも、少なくとも自分自身に関しては誰かから裏で糸を引かれているはずもない。三枝が常態に復しているのなら近づけないことはないだろう、と宮原は冷静に現状を把握する。けれども、あの日彼の地でフロレンド・Ｐ・アブドゥ記者から聞いた以上の、あるいはまったく別の話を三枝から聞き出せるかどうかの自信はない。

「なんか、長電話になってしまって済まないな。とにかく情報をありがとう」

「いえ、こちらこそ宮原さんのネタを奪ってしまって本当に申し訳ないです」

　そんな会話を最後に神崎との電話が終わる。宮原が善は急げと、さっそく三枝のスマートフォンに連絡する。すると、

「ああ、宮原さんでしたか？　もうそろそろお電話をいただける頃合ではなかろうかと思っておりましたよ」という耳障りが良い三枝の声が聞こえてくる。

　しかし言葉遣いは和やかだが、宮原はいつになく落ち着きに欠ける三枝を感じる。もちろん宮原の方が数倍落ち着きをなくしているが、ままよ！　と宮原は単刀直入に訊いてみる。

「お変わりないようで安心しました。一部では噂が飛び交っているようですね」

「日本Ｔワークの神崎さんは仕事熱心で誠実なところは大変結構なのですが、如何せん、まだお若い。いずれあなたのようになれるかどうか？」

「いきなり不躾な質問で失礼しますが、三枝さんは例の結社に懐柔されて戻って来られたのですか？」

「宮原さんはまだ独身でしたよね。ご結婚はなされないのですか？」

「ええ。候補はいますが、今はまだそこまでの気持ちにお互いなれないようで」

「だとすれば、本当にはお判りになられないかもしれませんよ」

「何のことでしょう？」

「わたしには遅くに生まれ、今年中学に上がった娘がいます」

「ええ、そのことは存じていますが……」

「元々、身体の強い娘ではなかったのですが、その娘が三月ほど前に危険な体調不良を起こし、精密検査を受けたと思ってください。ちょうどあなたたちと例の噂の話をした後のことです」

「はい、それで？」

「すべての検査結果が出揃ったのは数日後ですが、それまで小康状態を保っていた娘の心臓が完全な病魔に侵されていることがわかりました。有り体に言えば、遠からず心臓移植を受けなければ助からないほどの状態です。宮原さんにはどうか、そのときの親の気持ちを味わうことのない生涯を送っていただきたいものです」

「ああ、それで結社が三枝さんに接触を図ったのですね！　その事実を掴み、三枝さんに何らかの取引を持ちかけた？」

「すべてその通りではありませんが、概ね正解といって良いでしょう。それに二回も結社という言葉を使われたからには、その言葉の選択は偶然ではありませんね」

「……」

「どうです、宮原さん。これからわたしが指定した場所まで出向きませんか？　もちろん、あなたお独りで……。決して危険な目には合わせないとお約束しますよ」

　そして三枝が宮原にその場所を告げる。　三枝は独りで来いと宮原に言ったし、また宮原もそのつもりだったが、坂下理紗子に「これから三枝に会いに行く」と連絡すると勘の良い彼女がたちまち真相を見抜き、自分にも同行の権利があると主張する。

「きみの気持ちはもちろんわかるが、しかしそれだと他に行き場所を知っている者がいなくなってしまう。非常に危険だ！」

「大丈夫、メモは複数の第三者の手に渡るように手配するから」

「複数の？」

「ええ。それにその三枝さんって人、わたしがあなたと同行するだろうってことを見抜けないほど間抜けってわけでもないでしょう？」

　理紗子に指摘されれば宮原には確かにその通りに思えてくる。いつからなのかは知らないが、既に自分の行動は噂の関係者に監視されているのかもしれないのだ。仮にそうであるなら理紗子が言ったように自分たちの行動を知る人間の数を増やしておいた方が安全だろう。

「わかった。きみの言う通りにしよう」

　宮原が最終的な決断を下す。
