He lost not only because he was arrogant, but because he was too honest. He was constantly fighting wild animals and quarreling with his own kind. He didn't have to fight smart like Ardelheid.
Sometimes feelings that seem unimportant to others can mean a lot to someone. If he hated her because he was jealous, it was not her fault. She might feel a little sorry for him lol.
