第2話 人類の危機？ Crisis of Mankind?

　クルマに乗り込んだアオイは、世津奈とコータローにアイマスクを手渡す。

「悪いけどさ、あんたたちでも、行き先を教えるわけにいかない」

「アオイさん、水臭いっすよ。ボク達の仲じゃないすか」

　とコータローが不平を鳴らす。

「どういう仲だって言うんだ。トンネルから逃げ出す時、たまたま利害が一致しただけだ」

先にクルマで待っていた池辺が冷たく言い放つ。

「コー君、池辺先生が言う通りだわ。このクルマも隠れ家もアオイさんたちのグループが用意したもので、わたしたちは、よそ者なのよ」

世津奈がコータローをさとし、コータローが

「はい、はい」

とうなずく。

二人がアイマスクをつけ、クルマがスタートした。

　隠れ家で、4人は、上品で人当たりの柔らかな中年女性に出迎えられた。彼女はアオイ・池辺と「シェルター」を取り持つ仲介者で、周りから「Ｍ」と呼ばれている。「Ｍ」と世津奈、コータローは旧知の仲だ。

「宝生さん、お久しぶり」

　と「Ｍ」が穏やかな口調で言う。

「思いがけず、お世話になります」

世津奈が丁寧に答える。

「これからチードル博士から事情を聴きます。申し訳ないですが、お二人は席を外してくれるかしら？」

　という「Ｍ」の言葉に、コータローが

「嫌だって言ったら？」

　とやや攻撃的に反応する。

「電気をお見舞いするよ」

アオイがコータローの手を握り、コータローはアオイの手を振りほどいて飛び去る。

「コー君、冗談はやめて、良い子にしてるの。「Ｍ」さん、後で、うちの社長と話してくださいますか？」

「それは、いいでしょう。私も、あなたの会社を敵に回したくはありませんから」

「Ｍ」が微笑みながら答えた。

「Ｍ」、アオイ、池辺の3人がチードル博士を待たせてある小部屋に移動して聴取を始めようとすると、博士が先に「Ｍ」に問いかけてきた。

「富田博士が、あなた達に私を助け出すよう依頼したと言うのですか？」

「Ｍ」が

「その通りです。富田博士は私たち『シェルター』の保護下にあります。そして、『シェルター』があなたのことも保護するよう、依頼がありました」

　と答えると、チードル博士が褐色の顔に疑わし気な表情を浮かべた。

「シェルター」は国家や企業、反社会的勢力などの組織から命を狙われている個人を匿い守る秘密の民間グループだ。そうした個人の大部分は内部告発者やジャーナリストだ。

　正確には元・内部告発者、元・ジャーナリストだ。彼らを受け容れる時に、「シェルター」は彼らに整形手術を受けさせニセの戸籍を与え、それ以上の内部告発と取材を禁じる。避難者が追っ手に発見されるリスクを最小にするためだ。

「富田博士に会わせてください。彼と話さなければ、あなたの話が真実かどうかわからない」

「富田博士は、すでに私たちの保護下にあります。博士は、以前の仕事の関係者とは会いません」

「それは、博士の意志ですか？　それとも、あなた達が強要しているのですか？」

「博士の意志です。ですから、私が博士に代わってあなたとお話しさせてもらっています」

　チードル博士が「Ｍ」を見つめる。博士の顔に小さな笑みが浮かんだ。

「どうやら、私は正直な答えを得られるはずのない質問をしているようだ」

「私は正直にお答えしています」

「Ｍ」が微笑んで返し、チードル博士の顔に笑みが広がる。

　チードル博士がアオイと池辺に目を向けた。

「命を救ってもらったお礼をまだ言っていなかった。命がけで私を助け出してくれてありがとう」

「感謝はご無用。仕事ですから」

アオイが答えると池辺が日本語で「カッコつけやがって」とささやく。

　チードル博士が「Ｍ」に向き直る。

「こうなったら、あなた達がだれであろうとかまわない。ともかく、彼らがやっていることを止めてくれ。そうしないと、人類が想像もつかない危機に陥るかもしれない」

「人類ですって？」

　と「Ｍ」が訊き返す。

「そうだ。私たちは人類の破滅的な危機に直面しているかもしれないのだ」

チードル博士がおごそかな口調で言い、池辺が彼独特の皮肉な調子で

「人類の危機だってよ。デカイ話だな」

　と、アオイにささやいた。

Having got on the rescue car, Aoi handed eye-masks to Setsuna and Kohta.

"Sorry for this, but we are not allowed to show you where we are going."

"Come on, Aoi. We are your ally. Don't treat us like strangers."

grumbled Kohta.

"Who are our allies? In the tunnel, we happened to be on the same boat."

Ikebe replied in a severe voice.

"Koh, Dr. Ikebe is right. Both this car and the hideout have been prepared by SHELTER. We are outsiders, here."

Setsuna said to Kohta.

"Ok, Isee."

Setsuna and Kohta wore eye-masks and the car started.

At the hideout, a gentle and sophisticated middle aged woman welcomed the four. She was the mediator between Aoi-Ikebe pair and SHELTER. She was called "M."

"Setsuna, how have you been?"

"M" said to Setsuna in a mild voice.

"I've been fine, thank you. This time, we have come to bother you unexpectedly."

Setsuna replied gently.

"We are going to hear from Dr. Cheadle. Please wait in another room."

"M" said.

"If we insist that we be together?"

Kohta replied with a little assertive tone.

"I'll give you an electricity shock."

Aoi grabbed Kohta's hand. Kohta shook himself loose and stepped back.

"Kho, stop joking. Behave yourself. "M," could you talk with our CEO, Takayama , when you finished hearing?"

said Setsuna.

"That is perfectly OK. I have no intent to offend you and your firm."

"M" replied with a smile.

"M," Aoi and Ikebe walked in a small room where Dr. Cheadle had been waiting for them. Before they started asking Dr. Cheadle, said to "M,"

"Do you say Dr. Tomita ask you to help me out?"

"Yes. Dr. Tomita is already under our the protection of our group, SHELTER. He asks us to add you under our protection."

"M" replied. A doubt showed up on Dr. Cheadl's brown face.

"SHELTER is a secret civilian group that hides and protects individuals in danger of assassination by nations, firms, antisocial forces and other evil organizations. Most of them are whistle blowers and journalists.

Precisely speaking, they are former whistle blowers and ex-journalists. When "SHELTER" accepted them, it gave them orthopedic surgery and fake family registrations. SHELTER prohibited its refuges from further conflicts with the hostile organizations. This prohibition is aimed at minimizing the risk for the refugee to be found by the pursuer.

"Let me talk to Dr. Tomita. Otherwise, I cannot judge if you are telling the truth."

"Dr. Tomita has already been under our protection. He won't see anyone from his past work relations."

”Is that his intention, or you are forcing him? "

"It is his will. Therefore, I'm talking to you on his behalf."

Dr. Cheadle stared at "M." A faint smile appeared on his face.

"I'm likely to be asking you questions never honestly answered ."

said Dr. Cheadle.

"I'm answering honestly."

replied "M."

Smile spread over Dr. Cheadle's face.

Dr. Cheadle turned his eyes to Aoi and Ikebe.

"I have not yet thank you for saving my life. I appreciate so much you risked your lives to save me."

"You don't need to. We have just done our job."

replied Aoi in English.

"Ha, a phony girl."

Ikebe muttered in Japanese.

Dr. Cheadle turned his face to "M."

"Now, I don't care who you really are. Stop what they are doing. Otherwise, mankind is likely to fall into an unimaginable danger."

"Mankind?"

repeated "M."

"Yes, we may be facing a catastrophic danger for mankind."

said Dr. Cheadle solemnly. Ikebe whispered in Aoi's ear in the cynical tone peculiar to him.

"Crisis of mankind, he says. What a grandiose matter!"
