第1話 ゾンビ？ Zombies?

「こいつら、ゾンビか？」

放電型生体兵器・山科アオイが10回目の放電を終え、荒い息をつきながら言う。

「ゾンビじゃないっすよ。頭を吹き飛ばさなくても動きを止められますから」

産業スパイ・ハンターのコータローがプラスチック弾を装填したショットガンを撃ちながら言う。喉元に散弾が命中すると、相手は息を詰まらせて倒れる。

　しかし、一人を倒しても、その背後からすぐ次の一人が現れる。

"Are they zombies?"

said Aoi, an electricity-discharging bionics weapon, breathing hard after her 10th electricity discharge.

"No, they aren't. I can immobilize them without blowing their heads off."

Kohta, an industrial spy hunter, replied, shooting his shotgun loaded with plastic pellets. The pellets showered on the throat of an approaching guy and suffocated him. The guy fell down.

But, within a minute, another guy appeared from behind.

「アオイ、お前、何言ってんだ？　お前、本物のゾンビを見たことあんのか？　ゾンビなんて、映画の中にしかいないんだ」

アオイの相棒で、かつて天才外科医と言われながら医師免許を剥奪された池辺が怒鳴り、ショットガンを放つ。

「池辺先生、ゾンビって、あり得ないんですか？」

産業スパイ・ハンターでコータローの相棒、宝生 世津奈 が拳銃の弾倉を取り替えながら訊く。

「医学的に、存在し得ない」

池辺が断定的に答える。

"Aoi, what are you talking about ? Have you ever seen any real zombies? Zombies exist only in movies."

Ikebe, Aoi's partner, who had once been called "a genius surgeon" but was deprived of his medical license, yelled and fired his shot-gun.

"Dr., aren't there any chance of zombies existing?"

Setsuna Hosho, another industrial spy hunter and the partner of Koh, asked Ikebe while replacing the vacant magazine of her handgun.

"Medically speaking, there should be no such entity as zombies."

Ikebe replied in an assertive manner.

「ゾンビでなかったら、なんで、放電も銃撃も怖がらずに寄ってくんのよ！」

アオイが池辺に怒鳴り返してから、接近してくる「そいつら」に向かって11回目の放電をする。あたりが真っ白な光に満たされ、アオイの仲間たちは視界を失う。

「バカヤロー、放電する前に教えろって、何度言ったらわかるんだ！」

池辺が手で目をおおって叫ぶ。

「ホント、アオイさん、勘弁してくださいよ」

コータローも文句をつける。

「放電中に言っても、無駄ですよ。アオイさん、意識失ってますから」

世津奈が落ち着いた声で言う。

"If they were not zombies, why would they keep coming with no fear for lightening and firing? We have beaten 50 of them."

Aoi yelled back to Ikebe and made her 11th electricity discharge. Bright white light filled the space and Aoi's comrades lost their sight.

"Idiot! How many times do I have to tell you? You've got to warn us before lightening."

Ikebe yelled, covering his eyes with his hands.

”Please don't do this, Aoi."　

Kohta complained.

”Whatever you say now, it won't work. Aoi is discharging electricity,then her awareness is gone."

Setsuna said in a calm voice.

　ボディガードの2人組、アオイと池辺、産業スパイ・ハンターの2人組、コータローと世津奈。４人は、直径３メートルほどのトンネルの中で、謎の敵対的集団を迎え撃っていた。敵は何の武装もしていない。ただ、ひたすら押し寄せてくる。最前列の連中を倒すと、すぐに、その後ろから新しい寄せ手が現れる。

Aoi and Ikebe, a bodyguard pair, and Kohta and Setsuna, an industrial-spy-hunter pair were intercepting an unknown hostile group in a tunnel with a diameter of about 3 meters. The unknown were unarmed. They just kept swarming on Aoi and her comrades. The forefront guys were beaten, then the other guys appeared from behind.

　池辺は不安を抱いていた。池辺は胸のうちでつぶやく。

「アオイの放電エネルギーも無限ではない。弾もそのうち切れる。押し寄せる敵にのみこまれるのは時間の問題だ」

　世津奈は、楽観的だった。世津奈は胸のうちでつぶやく。

「チードル博士がトンネルの出口で待機していたクルマに逃げ込む時間は十分に稼いだ。今頃は、私たちを救出するために、次のクルマがトンネルの出口に到着しているはず」

　4人は、謎の研究施設から自然言語の研究者、トマス・チードル博士を救い出すために謎の集団と闘っていた。

Ikebe was anxious. Ikebe said to himself.

”There is a limit in Aoi's electric energy. The plastic pellets and bullets will be exhausted. It's a matter of time that we will be swallowed up by the surging enemies."

Setsua was optimistic. She said to herself.

"We have bought enough time for Dr. Cheadle to get in the car waiting for him at the tunnel exit. Soon, another car will come to fetch us."

The four had been fighting to redeem Dr. Thomas Cheadle, a researcher in natural language from a unknown research laboratory.

　世津奈のスマートフォンが鳴った。画面に「迎えのクルマ、到着」というメッセージが現れる。

「クルマが来ました。引き揚げましょう」

　と世津奈がのこりの３人に声をかけると、池辺が、

「わかった、後は任せた」

　と言って、真っ先にトンネルの出口に向かって駆け出した。

Setsuna's smartphone rang. The message "The car to fetch you have just arrived," appeared on the display.

"Our car has arrived. Let's get out of here."

said Setsuna to Aoi, Kohta and Ikebe.

Ikebe answered

"All right, I'll let you guys take care of the rest of them."

Then, he ran for the tunnel exit.

「あの人、人間性こわれてますよね」

コータローが呆れ声を出す。

放電を終えて意識を取り戻したアオイが、ケロリとした声で

「自分で手術して直せって言ってあるよ」

　と答えた。

「ともかく、私たちもここから逃げましょう」

世津奈の声を合図に、三人は、放電と射撃を続けながら後退し始めた。

"His humanity is broken."

said Kohta in an astounded voice.

Aoi, who had finished the electricity discharge and recovered her awareness, replied nonchalantly.

"I've told him to fix it by surgery on his own."

"Anyway, we've got to get out of here quick."

Setsuna signaled the other two to evacuate the tunnel. Three of them began to withdraw keep lightening and shooting.
