J.R.R.TolkienのThe unexpected Journey中の詩「ドワーフの歌The Dowarven Song」の周到なる韻律について、かつその和訳を試みたことに関して

１）原歌について

　余はいかにトールキンの詩を愛するか

　この小論の目的は、最後の余の訳詞までに至る紆余曲折の余の思考経路と知的な放浪の楽しみを明らかにすることである。

　この論考は商用を目的としていない。著作権は尊守するが、論ずるにおいては、読者が原詩を参照し得ないと余の論ずるところを読者が理解し得ない場合があると思う。よって敢えて著作権・出版権者に断りなしに原詩を掲げる。インターネットのオンラインでの発表の性格上、その権利を守りきれることは出来ない。インターネットでは非商用目的で随所にこの原詩を見ることが出来るが、この拙稿でも同様の目的であり、問題がある場合、敢えてその非を真摯に認める所存である。

原詩）

　すべての段における韻律を注目して貰いたい。同じ脚韻を周到に踏んでいることがお分かりになるだろうか。あとでその構造に触れることとする。

Far over the misty mountains cold

To dungeons deep and caverns old

We* must away ere break of day

To seek the pale enchanted gold.

The dwarves* of yore made mighty spells,

While hammers fell like ringing bells

In places deep, where dark things sleep,

In hollow halls beneath the fells.

For ancient king and elvish lord

There many a gleaming golden hoard

They* shaped and wrought, and light they caught

To hide in gems on hilt of sward.

On silver necklaces they strung

The flowering stars, on crowns they hung

The dragon-fire, in twisted wire

They* meshed the light of moon and sun.

Far over the misty mountains cold

To dungeons deep and caverns old

We* must away, ere break of day,

To claim our long-forgotten gold.

Goblets they carved there for themselves

And harps of gold; where no man delves

There lay they* long, and many a song*

Was sung unheard by men or elves.

The pines* were roaring on the height,

The winds* were moaning in the night,

The fire* was red, it flaming spread;

The trees* like torches blazed with light.

The bells* were ringing in the dale

And men* looked up with faces pale;

The dragon's ire* more fierce than fire

Laid low their towers and houses frail.

The mountain* smoked beneath the moon;

The dwarves*, they* heard the tramp of doom.

They* fled their hall to dying fall

Beneath his feet, beneath the moon.

Far over the misty mountains grim

To dungeons deep and caverns dim

We* must away, ere break of day,

To win our harps and gold from him!
