〈「希望」こそが希望〉

（ 20 ）いま私は、気休めで死までに心の安寧を確立することを訴えているのではありません。また、奇跡がひとりでに起きるのを信じて祈れと言っているのでもありません。私たち自身の力で奇跡を起こしたいのです。かりそめにも人類史の最後のページを絶望と悲嘆によって締めくくるべきではありません。

〈 “HOPE” is a hope 〉

（ 20 ）I am neither suggesting that people establish peace in mind in the face of annihilation, nor recommending everyone pray for a miracle to occur, but would like us to do a miracle by ourselves. If we were to write on the last page of human history book, we should not conclude it with despair and sorrow.

（ 21 ）Ｍ・ルターはこう言ったと言われています。「たとえ明日、世界が滅びようとも、私は今日りんごの木を植える」。

（ 21 ）Martin Luther said, “Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree.”

（ 22 ）また、一八六〇年代の日本に、坂本龍馬という志士がいました。彼は、「いったん志を抱けば、弱気を発してはいけない。たとえその目的が成就できなくても、その目的への道中で目的に向かって倒れて死ぬべきだ」と言い残しています。

（ 22 ）In the 1860's at the end of the Edo era in Japan, there was a charismatic Samurai named Ryoma Sakamoto. Loosely translated, he said,“Once you cherish an aspiration, you should not emit bearish at all. Even if you cannot reach your goal, you should die striving to reach that goal.”

（ 23 ）皆さん、七十億の人間が心を一つにして、ことだまの力を持つただ一つのコトバを唱えたら、いったいどういうことになるでしょうか。生き残る可能性が〇・一％でもある限り、私たちは決してあきらめない、そう強く望みます。いま一度申し上げます。私たち自身の手で奇跡を起こしましょう！

（ 23 ）Ladies and gentlemen, who on earth knows what will happen when 70 billion individuals, with one mind, chant out a single word in unison with its kotodama power? Now I strongly hope we will never give up if there is 0.1 per cent of the possibility for survival. Again, let us do a miracle by ourselves!
