A Bite of Summer

 Summer has come—

 a lukewarm breeze blows,

 cicadas cry,

 and love begins to melt,

 spreading on my tongue.

 A single shell chime

 swings and sings its tune;

 with every note,

 something deep within

 gently stirs and sways.

 Sunflowers laugh,

 blinding in their joy,

 while round and round

 a pinwheel spins fast—

 I was watching you.

 Buzzing air roars,

 its chill sweeping past—

 down your neck,

 a drop of sweat runs,

 hiding my heartbeat.

 I pretend to lose

 to the blazing light,

 lie down like a cat,

 all curled up and warm,

 giggling quietly.

“It’s hot today,”

 your voice falls like mist,

 touches my skin—

 your palm brushes mine

 like a passing thought.

 Salt and sweetness,

 the scent of summer—

 sweat and longing.

 Even the space left

 feels good enough to eat.

 The goldfish blink

 with sleepy round eyes,

 drifting slowly

 in the shaded bench’s

 ever-stretching shade.

 The sky unfolds,

 a flower of light—

 one firework blooms,

 and in its shimmer,

 you stole all of it.

 From my fingers,

 the shaved ice vanishes.

 After the kiss,

 nothing else remains—

 only summer stays.

 ーーーーーーー

This is a sequence of ten linked tanka poems.

It captures the light and sound of summer, the salt of sweat, the sweetness of distance, and the fleeting scent of love.

 Dedicated to tomjerry1995.
