第3話 are we really going to kill that tiger?

When Qin Sa reached the door and opened it, he saw a burly man dressed in tiger skin with a long scar on the left side of his face. This was Chen Hu, the head hunter of Shu Village.

"Uncle Chen, you're here! Come in and sit. Grandpa Tree will be here soon," Qin Sa said with a smile, opening the door wider and motioning for Chen Hu to come inside, away from the cold.

"Qin boy, you're up early today. I'll wait inside for the village chief," Chen Hu replied with a warm smile, taking Qin Sa's small hand and leading him inside. He closed the door and walked to the living room to wait for Li Shuhe.

Soon, Li Shuhe emerged from his room, having finished getting ready, and saw Chen Hu playing with the small Qin Sa.

"Chen Hu, what brings you here so early?" Li Shuhe asked softly as he sat down on a nearby chair. He motioned for Qin Sa to come sit beside him, worried that Chen Hu might accidentally hurt his beloved grandson with his rough demeanor.

"Ahem, it's like this, Village Chief. Today, we planned to go hunting early, but along the way, we saw the tracks of a demon beast tiger. We followed the tracks for a while and found that the tiger had settled about twelve miles from the village. What's more, the tiger is pregnant, so I suspect it plans to give birth there," Chen Hu said, his expression serious. He explained the situation carefully because they, as mere humans, were no match for a demon beast tiger. While they might handle an ordinary tiger, a demon beast was a different matter altogether.

"A pregnant demon beast tiger, huh? That is indeed a serious problem. If we don't handle this properly, once it gives birth, it might come here to hunt for food, and we could become its targets," Li Shuhe said, his face darkening. Everyone in Shu Village was a mere mortal, no match for such a formidable beast.

"Grandpa Tree, can't even Uncle Chen defeat this tiger?" Qin Sa asked, shaking Li Shuhe's old hand, his eyes full of curiosity.

"Qin Sa, be good. Go rest in your room for a while. Grandpa and Uncle Chen need to discuss this. We’ll go out later, okay?" Li Shuhe said gently, leading Qin Sa back to his room.

"Okay," Qin Sa said, watching as Li Shuhe turned to leave, then lay back down on the bed.

In the living room, Li Shuhe returned after settling Qin Sa and continued discussing the tiger with Chen Hu.

"Chen Hu, you should set up powerful traps about three hundred meters from the tiger's lair. Once it gives birth, lure it to the traps. Even if you can't kill it, at least severely injure it," Li Shuhe said, a glint of resolve in his eyes. He intended to kill the tiger after it gave birth, as it would be at its weakest then, offering them their best chance.

"Understood, Village Chief. I'll take the men and set up the traps right away," Chen Hu said, his eyes also flashing with determination. He left Li Shuhe's house and gathered the hunting team to set up traps three hundred meters from the tiger's lair.

"Let's hope nothing goes wrong," Li Shuhe murmured, watching Chen Hu leave. He then returned to the kitchen to prepare breakfast, planning to take Qin Sa out for a walk after they ate.

Meanwhile, twelve miles away at the mountain peak, Chen Hu and his six men were hiding near the tiger's lair. They observed the tiger from a distance, noting its massive, pregnant belly.

"Boss, do you think this tiger is stronger than the ones we've hunted before?" asked Zhang Qiang, a man dressed in coarse blue clothing, holding a large knife.

"Yes, I suspect this tiger is part of the demon tribe, though not as powerful as the real demons. Still, it could easily kill any one of us. We can't be careless. We'll wait until it gives birth, then act. For now, our job is to set up powerful traps three hundred meters from here," Chen Hu said, watching the lair. He then led his team to set up the traps.

"Alright," the men replied. They quickly dug holes in the ground and placed sharpened bamboo spikes inside. They also set up chain traps in the trees nearby. Their aim was to seriously injure the tiger and make it fall into the pit.

After five or six hours, they finished setting up the traps and waited for the tiger to give birth.

Time flew by, and seven days passed in the blink of an eye.

On the day the tiger was to give birth, Li Shuhe, Qin Sa, and the six hunters waited near the lair. Chen Hu watched from a tree, keeping an eye on the tiger.

Roar, roar, roar!

The deafening roars echoed for miles, warning weaker animals to stay away. It was the king of the forest making its presence known.

"Grandpa Tree, are we really going to kill that tiger? What about its babies?" Qin Sa asked, hearing the roars and looking up at Li Shuhe. It was a question fitting for a seven-year-old who didn't yet understand the harsh realities of survival.

"Silly boy, of course, we'll bring the babies back to the village. Then you'll have cute little tigers to play with," Li Shuhe said with a kind smile, looking at Qin Sa's innocent face. Their goal was the adult tiger. The cubs could be raised in the village and might even help with hunting in the future.
