Emergency Doctor

Madoka Akishima was moved from the operating room to the ICU.

Her electrocardiogram monitor showed a regular waveform, proving that her heart was beating.

She was still not awake from the anesthesia.

I gently looked at her face.

She looked different from when she had a seizure.

I wonder what it was, the heavy shadow that seemed to envelop her before. It felt like it had disappeared.

I sat on a chair and touched Madoka's hand.

The warmth of her hand reached mine. And I felt another warmth, an invisible hand, on top of it.

That warmth was very nostalgic and... dear to me.

"Madoka didn't give up. That's why she was able to walk her future again. Kouichi, what will you do? Aren't you done with standing still? How long will you drag on...? You too, already... Go towards the light you saw.

That's my wish... I loved you, Kouichi. No, I still love you. I always, always love you."

I suddenly saw her. Mayumi's figure disappeared from in front of me...

But I didn't feel lonely like before.

Rather, everything, my whole being... And my heart felt very warm.

Broken Heart. My broken heart was... slowly regaining its shape.

A few days later. at the outpatient clinic, Sasaki, who had been hospitalized with inflammation in his knee due to diabetes, came to see me.

When the examination was over, Sasaki asked me hesitantly.

"What happened to that girl in the special room? She didn't die or anything..."

"She's fine. She's been transferred to the university hospital and is recovering well. She's more energetic than before."

"That's good... And hey, I heard something. Dr. Tanabe, are you going back to the university hospital?"

"Yes, I'm sorry to leave you guys when we've become close."

"I see, so it was true. You're going back. Well, I guess Dr. Tanabe is better off at the university hospital than at this old hospital. I'll miss you."

Sasaki's words, old, must have triggered him. I heard Dr. Miura coughing in the next booth.

"This hospital is a great hospital. It can offer patients something that the university hospital can't. The university hospital has its role as a university hospital. But this hospital is like this, it faces the disease with the patients. This hospital is where the patients and doctors, and nurses, become one and think of the best treatment and care for the patients. And work towards it. I think Sasaki's recovery is also thanks to Sasaki's attitude towards his illness and the staff of this hospital who supported him."

"Oh, well, I don't hate this hospital either."

"Thank you very much. Dr. Miura will take over from the next visit, so please keep up the good work."

"Is that so? What will Dr. Tanabe do when he goes back to the university hospital?"

"I'm... an emergency doctor."

The emergency call rang.

"This is North Rescue, requesting acceptance of two injured people due to a traffic accident. 35-year-old male, JCS 300, bleeding from left temporal region. Vital signs blood pressure 110/76, heart rate 68. The other one is a 28-year-old female, JCS 100, complaining of pain in her abdomen. Vital signs..."

"Roger that. We'll take them."

"Hey, the next transportees are coming. How are you doing over there, Tanabe?"

"I'll be able to ligate the bleeding site in a little while."

"Got it. As soon as you're done, move to the operating room."

"Roger!"

"How are you doing? Dr. Tanabe?"

"Associate Professor Jyoumi... No, Professor Jyoumi."

I came back to North Medical University Emergency Center.

"Tanabe, you look like you've snapped out of it. But after what happened, I'm surprised he came back this far."

"Is that so? Sending him over there wasn't a waste then."

"No, rather than a waste, he grew up. As a doctor and as a human being. I might not be supposed to say this but..."

"What is it?"

"Well, when I look at him now, I often remember Dr. Mayumi Iwamisita."

"Is that so? Mayumi..."

Professor Jyoumi looked nostalgically at me facing the patient.

"By the way, Professor Jyoumi, congratulations on your promotion to Jokanetu."

"Oh, thank you."

"Over there you'll be in charge of all surgery departments, that's almost equal to the director."

"No, it's just a job with more chores. I still want to hold a scalpel."

"Hahaha, please spare us that. If Professor Jyoumi holds a scalpel, we won't need any other surgeons."

"You're good at flattery, aren't you?"

"By the way, are you taking Tanabe with you?"

"Yes, that's the plan, but is there a problem?"

"Well, it's a loss for us to lose Tanabe. He's a ready-made force, and his skills and judgment are in the best condition now."

"I see, but he doesn't belong here. He has to jump into another world from here. And the fellows here are also strong enough. So I think we have to make the doctors who have to grow from now on work hard to fill his gap."

"That's harsh. As expected from the demon surgeon, Professor Jyoumi."

"Well then," he said and left for the next patient who was brought in.

Mayumi... Are you watching?

His figure, and the staff of this emergency center.

The place where you used to work...

I'm burning this scene into my eyes.

The image of this emergency center without you.

I used you.

No, now that I think about it, maybe I was used by you.

Mayumi. You appeared in front of me and I used you. And you used my knowledge and skills as a doctor.

If I think of it as a sin, what I did to you was worse.

And you left me a challenge and left this world. You disappeared from in front of me.

I wanted to thank you, really. No, I had to apologize to you for your life as a doctor.

But you were one step ahead of me.

You made me such a promise...

I'll aim for the top in this organization called the university hospital. Until the end... I'll climb as high as I can.

And to fulfill my promise with you, I'll take Tanabe out of here.

But I always wonder. Are you really okay with that?

But now that it's come to this, maybe that's the best choice for you and him, Dr. Tanabe.

If thinking that way, believing that way is an apology to you...

"Phew, another day is over. Mayumi."

I was where Mayumi was. Where Mayumi was last... transported to this North Emergency Center, I spent my days facing the patients.

Before I came back to North, I had a fear. That I would be haunted by Mayumi's last sight...

She was covered in blood, transported, and died in my hands.

The fear that that sight would dominate me.

But that fear didn't come up. Come up? No, fear is something inside me. When I faced a severely injured patient, the sense of duty to keep the patient's life in this world motivated me.

After drinking a hot cup of coffee in the lounge, I visited Madoka Akishima's room.

I quietly opened the door and approached her bed separated by a curtain.

"Madoka," I called out.

She turned on the bed light and was reading a book.

"Dr. Tanabe"

Her smile at seeing me was gentle and soft.

"Did you just finish?"

"Yeah"

"Well, good job"

"Thank you. How are you feeling?"

"I'm fine"

"Yeah, I can tell by your smile"

"......Idiot"

Her cheeks started to blush a little.

And then she said, "Oh yeah, lately my dad and mom come together a lot. What should I do? It's kind of embarrassing to watch them."

"Hahaha, that's good isn't it?"

"Well, I don't think they'll get back together again... But... Somehow I'm happy"

"Yeah, me too"

"Hey, T-Tanabe-sensei... Are you... devoted to Dr. Mayumi?"

"Hmm, I wonder? Mayumi won't let me go"

"Oh, so it's not that Dr. Tanabe lets go of Dr. Mayumi, but Dr. Mayumi won't let go of you?"

"That's right. It's a problem"

I said and smiled.

"I see, yeah, I get it. Because Dr. Mayumi said she really loved her boyfriend. And that was Dr. Tanabe. I'm a little disappointed"

"Why is that?"

"Because Dr. Mayumi is such a beautiful doctor. I thought she would have someone cooler"

"That's too bad. But truly, I'm Mayumi's boyfriend and Mayumi is my girlfriend."

"Okay, okay, I get it. Geez, dad and mom and Dr. Tanabe, are you all trying to rub it in my face? I'll find a cool and handsome boyfriend someday and show you. By then, it'll be too late to be jealous."

"Jealous...?"

"Ugh, you're so dense! Dense Tanabe!! It's past the lights-out time! I'm going to sleep, so go home already."

"Alright. You can talk enough, that's good! Well then, good night."

"Good night..."

She said faintly, covering herself with a blanket.

And I quietly left her room.

Two weeks later.

Madoka Akishima was discharged from the North Medical University Hospital.
