第3話 Mid Alonium Era

In the mid-term of the Alonium era, with the integration of research institutions, knowledge was consolidated. Team-based research, which was rarely performed before, became the majority of institutional activities.

Efficiency in research led to the announcement of new discoveries one after another. For example, complete non-flammability, toxicity, molar mass, and density. All except one were revealed through experimental results at the Alonium research institution. So, who discovered the remaining one?

It was Yuri E. Bon, an individual researcher who sacrificed his life to prove that Alonium had toxicity. How do we know? A minute amount of Alonium was detected in Yuri E. Bon's body. Perhaps Yuri E. Bon used himself as a test subject and inhaled Alonium. Therefore, the toxicity of Alonium was confirmed.

However, the cause remained unknown. While it was evident that Yuri E. Bon died from Alonium exposure, the exact process of his death was unclear. Researchers summoned the forensic pathologist who examined Yuri E. Bon and learned about the condition of the body at that time. The result showed a red, swollen mark near the thyroid. Scientists hypothesized that the repulsive force of Alonium caused dysfunction in the thyroid and nervous system.

To verify whether this was correct, an experiment involving inhaling Alonium was deemed necessary, albeit harsh. However, scientists were not willing to be the test subjects. Instead, they used experimental animals brought from elsewhere. While some scientists internally opposed this, considering the circumstances and the future development of chemistry, they had no choice but to agree.

Thus, numerous lives of animals were lost. Results indicated that if the forensic pathologist's statement was accurate, the hypothesis was likely correct. However, the pathologist who examined Yuri E. Bon passed away suddenly before starting the animal experiments, and there was no way to verify the truth.

Subsequently, scientists tried to hide the fact that they had repeated animal experiments. However, the Alonium research institution, which had attracted high public attention from the beginning, was soon exposed by the media. Criticism, condemnation, and verbal abuse followed. Scientists working at the institution were mentally drained by the continuous negative responses. Consequently, suicides and resignations among scientists were not uncommon.

Amid the progress of chemistry and the recognition of animal rights, the world's voice demanded a balance between the two. The Alonium research institution, holding official authority, was pressured to change. It became an unavoidable situation.
