前のエピソード――8. The truth of the rumor　８　噂の真相

Jesus Christ was sentenced to crucifixion on the hill of Gorgoda (Note 11) because of a feud between him and Judaism. It involves one of the miracles that Christ allegedly caused several times in his life. According to John's Gospel chapter 5, Jesus was then in Jerusalem during the festival. In Jerusalem, there was a pond called Bethesda, near which many sick and blind people were suffering. They were waiting for the water to move. The meaning was that the messenger of the Lord occasionally descended into the pond, moved the water in the pond, and then the first to enter the pond was healed no matter what illness he had. However, there was a sick person there for as long as 38 years. Jesus saw him lying down and knew it would last for a long time, and Jesus said to him.

"Do you want to get better?"

Then the sick person answered.

"I have no one to put me in the pond when the water in the pond is swirled.

When I go to the pond, there is another person and that person goes down first. "

Then Jesus told him.

"Get up, clean up your sleeping place, and walk."

It was said that the person immediately recovered from his long-term illness, pick away his bedding and started walking. This was the content of the miracle that Jesus performed in the Bethesda pond. But unfortunately, that day was also the Sabbath. So the Jews ordered the healed ex-sick.

"Today is the Sabbath, so you shouldn't raise the floor."

Then the former sick person answered the Jews.

"The one who healed me said to me, 'Put away your bedding and walk.'"

The Jews asked the ex-sick who said it.

But he didn't know Jesus, and he had already left.

After that, Jesus found the es-sick man in the palace and said.

"You are better, so you shouldn't sin anymore. Otherwise, worse things will happen to you."

The ex-sick who knew Jesus in this way told the Jews about Jesus, and the Jews knew that the object to persecut was Jesus.

But Jesus said to them.

"My father is still working, so I am working too."

Because of that word, the Jews were even more motivated to kill Jesus. The reason is not only did Jesus break his Sabbath, but he equated himself with God and called God his Father.

Since Judaism is monotheistic, there is only one god. That is why the words of Jesus Christ were perceived by the Jews as the only superlative blasphemy against the god Yahweh. And the Pharisees, who were critical of the political corruption of Joseph Caiaphas, the high priest of Judaism in Jerusalem, the capital of the matter, and the Annas clan, the Jewish power to which he belongs, they had turned to the side of accusing Jesus.

　イエス・キリストがゴルゴダ（註１１）の丘で磔の刑に処されたのはユダヤ教との確執があったからで、それにはキリストが生涯に数度起こしたとされる奇跡の一つが関与する。

　ヨハネの福音書第五章によると、そのときイエスは祭りの最中のエルサレムにいる。エルサレムにはベテスダと呼ばれる池があり、その近くに大勢の病人や盲人などが伏せっている。彼らは水が動くのを待っていたのだ。その意味は主の使いが時折その池に降臨し、池の水を動かすのだが、水が動かされた後で最初に池に入った者はどんな病気に罹かっていても治癒するからだ。だが、そこに三十八年もの長きに渡り療養中の者がいる。イエスは彼が伏せっているところを見、それが長期に渡るのを知ると彼に言う。

「良くなりたいか？」

　すると病人が答える。

「わたしには水がかきまわされたとき、池の中にわたしを入れてくれる者がおりません。池に行きかけると、もう他の人がいて先に降りて行くのです」

　そこでイエスが彼に告げる。

「起きて、床を取り上げて歩きなさい」

　するとその人はたちまち長患いから治り、床を取り上げて歩き出したという。

　これがベテスダの池でイエスが行った奇跡の内容だ。だが生憎なことに、その日は安息日でもあったのだ。だからユダヤ人たちは癒された元病人に命じる。

「きょうは安息日だから床を取り上げてはいけない」

　すると元病人がユダヤ人たちに答える。

「わたしを治してくださった方が『床を取り上げて歩け』と言われたのです」

　ユダヤ人たちは誰がそれを言ったのかと元病人に尋ねるが、彼はイエスを知らず、またイエスは既にその場から立ち去っている。

　その後、イエスは宮中で元病人を見つけ、こんなふうに言う。

「あなたは良くなったのだから、もう罪を犯してはなりません。そうしないともっと悪い事があなたの身に起こります」

　こうしてイエスを知った元病人はユダヤ人たちにイエスのことを告げ、それでユダヤ人たちは迫害すべき対象がイエスであることを知る。けれども、そんな彼らにイエスが言う。

「わたしの父はいまに至るまで働いておられます。ですからわたしも働いているのです」

　その言葉のためにユダヤ人たちはますますイエスを殺害しようという想いを強める。何故かといえばイエスが安息日を破っただけでなく、自らを神と等しいと存在と見なし、かつ神を自分の父と呼んだからだ。

　ユダヤ教は一神教なので神は一柱しか存在しない。だからイエス・キリストの言葉は唯一神ヤハウェに対する最上級の冒涜としてユダヤ人たちに捉えられたのだ。そして、この事件により当事の首都エルサレムのユダヤ教大祭司であったヨセフ・カヤパと彼が属するユダヤの一大勢力アンナス一族の政治的腐敗に批判的な立場を取っていたパリサイ人たちもイエスを告発する側にまわってしまう。
