(ii) Weaver Girl Legend
(A) The Tsutsumi of Shimono
In Shimono, Choyo Village, Aso County, Higo Province, there is a famous tsutsumi called the Tsutsumi of Shimotsuke. Locally, the pond that holds water for the rice field is called a tsutsumi, but this Tsutsumi mysteriously never dries up like other tsutsumis. And at the bottom of the deep water is a beautiful maiden weaving cloth. Climbing up a tall tree by the side of the Tsutsumi gives her a good view. But even if you look at her normally, you can never see her. Turn your back toward the tsutsumi, bend over, and look into it with your head upside down. Then you can clearly see the beautiful maiden weaving cloth at the bottom of the tsutsumi. (Jiro Oh'yano in Aso, Higo Province)
(B) Mt. Kurohime
There are many tales about Mt. Kurohime, south of Kashiwazaki, Echigo Province.
It is said that a god weaves cloth in a grotto on the mountain and the sound of the loom can be heard faintly from time to time. Then, in the old days, when the god came to this top, the sailing pole of the ship has become a stone, and here and there you can even see the marks of the iron ring, which is called Hobashira Ishi (sailing stone). It is also called Funagata Iwa (ship-shaped rock). It is said that 20 villages at the foot of the mountain still don't grow wheat because when the god came, wheat damaged his eyes.
Note: On Mt. Kurohime, there is a shrine dedicated to Numakawahime-no-Mikoto. Similar to the sound of a loom, Mt. Mikagura in Naka-Kanbara County has a story of a mountaintop performance. (Toshinori Nakanishi)
