第1巻 第7章 (詐称は不採算)

Let us here turn and consider whether by deterring his associates from quackery and false seeming he did not directly stimulate them to the pursuit of virtue.

ここで、ソクラテスは、友人達に、詐称や虚偽の外見をやめさせる事によって徳、善行、善の追求を直接的に促（うなが）さなかったかどうかを話題にして考えてみましょう。

He used often to say there was no better road to renown than the one by which a man became good at that wherein he desired to be reputed good.

ソクラテスはよく「高名に成るための手段のうち、『優れた者である』と評価されたい領域で優れた者に成るという手段よりも良い手段は無い」と話していた。(「優れた者である」と評価されたい領域で優れた者に成る事は、高名に成るための最良の手段である。)

The truth of the concept he enforced as follows:

次のように、ソクラテスは、(「『優れた者である』と評価されたい領域で優れた者に成る事は、高名に成るための最良の手段である」という、)この考えの正しさを強く主張した。

Let us reflect on what a man would be driven to do who wanted to be thought a good flute player, without really being so.

実際には、そうではない(、優れたフルート奏者ではない)のに、『優れたフルート奏者である』と思われたい人が、どんな事をするように追い込まれてしまうか熟考してみましょう。

He would be forced to imitate the good flute player in the externals of his art, would he not?

技術以外で、(技術ではないものによって、)優れたフルート奏者のふりをするように追い込まれてしまうでしょう。そうではないですか？

(*Version A: )and first of all, seeing that these artists always have a splendid equipment, and travel about with a long train of attendants, he must have the same;(*Version B: and first of all, seeing that these artists always have furniture of the finest, and travel about with a long train of attendants, he must have the same;)

そのため、まず、フルート奏者などの芸術家達は見事な装備を常に持っている事を考えると、また、芸術家達は多数の従者と共に巡業する事を考えると、優れたフルート奏者のふりをする人は同一のもの(、見事な装備と多数の従者)を持たなければいけません。

in the next place, they can command the plaudits of a multitude, he therefore must pack a conclave of clackers.

次に、芸術家達は大衆からの称賛を思い通りに集める事ができます。そのため、優れたフルート奏者のふりをする人は、(称賛の声に似ている)玩具用花火クラッカーの秘密の集合(と言える称賛を偽装する多数のもの)を細工しなければいけません。

But one thing is clear:

ただ、(次のように、)一つの事は明白なのです。

nothing must induce him to give a performance, or he will be exposed at once, and find himself a laughing-stock not only as a sorry sort of flute player, but as a wretched imposter.

優れたフルート奏者のふりをする人は演奏するように何ものにも誘導されてはいけません。さもなければ、優れたフルート奏者のふりをする人は、すぐに真実が暴かれて、お粗末なフルート奏者としてだけではなく、お粗末な詐称者として、気づくと笑いものに成っているでしょう。

And now he has a host of expenses to meet;

そして、優れたフルート奏者のふりをしていた人は、支払う必要が有る多額の費用を抱える羽目に成ってしまいます。

and not one advantage to be reaped;

しかも、優れたフルート奏者のふりをしていた人が刈り入れる事ができる利益は何も無いのです。

and worse than all his evil reputation.

それ(、詐称のための多額の費用を抱えてしまう事、詐称による利益が何も無い事)は、優れたフルート奏者のふりをしていた人の全ての悪評よりも悪いのです。

What is left him but to lead a life stale and unprofitable, the scorn and mockery of men?

人々から笑いものにされて、味がしなく成った不採算な人生を送る以外に、優れたフルート奏者のふりをしていた人には何が残されていますか？

Let us try another case.

別の場合(の考察)を試してみましょう。

Suppose a man wished to be thought a good general or a good pilot, though he were really nothing of the sort,

実際には、そのような者ではない(、優れた将軍や優れた操舵手ではない)のに、優れた将軍か優れた操舵手と思われたい人を考えてみなさい。

let us picture to our minds how it will fare with him.

優れた将軍か優れた操舵手と思われたい人にとって、どのように事態が運ぶか想像してみましょう。

Of two misfortunes one:

次のように、2つの災いのうち、1つの災いが有ります。

either with a strong desire to be thought proficient in these matters, he will fail to get others to agree with him, which will be bad enough;

(軍の指揮や船の操縦といった、)これらの事柄における達人であると思われたいという強い願望によって、優れた将軍か優れた操舵手と思われたい人は、自分に賛同するように他人の心をつかむ事に失敗してしまうでしょう。他人の心をつかめない事は十分なほどの悪い事に成ってしまうでしょう。

or he will succeed, with worse result;

また、優れた将軍か優れた操舵手と思われたい人は、成功しても、失敗した場合よりも悪い結果をともなうでしょう。

since it stands to reason that anyone appointed to work a vessel or lead an army without the requisite knowledge will speedily ruin a number of people whom he least desires to hurt, and will make but a sorry exit from the stage himself.

なぜなら、必要不可欠な知識無しで、船を操縦するように、または、軍を指揮するように任命された、どの人も、自分が最も傷つけたくないと望んでいる多数の人々を速やかに滅ぼす羽目に成るであろうし、実に凄惨に自身も死んで『この世』という舞台から去る羽目に成るであろう事は、当然の道理です。

Thus first by one instance and then another would he demonstrate the unprofitableness of trying to appear rich, or courageous, or strong, without really being the thing pretended.

このように、まず、一つの例によって、それから、別の例によって、ソクラテスは、外見だけで、実際には、そういった者(、金持ちや勇敢な人や強い人)のふりをして、金持ちに見せようと試みる事、または、勇敢に見せようと試みる事、または、強そうに見せようと試みる事の不採算性を明確に示した。

"You are sure sooner or later to have commands laid upon you beyond your power to execute, and failing just where you are credited with capacity, the world will give you no commiseration."

「(実際には、そうではないのに、ふりをして見せかける人である、)あなたは、遅かれ早かれ必ず、自分の実行能力を超えた命令を課されます。そして、能力によって信頼されていた領域で、ちょっと失敗しても、大衆は何（なん）の容赦も与えてくれないのです」(とソクラテスは話した。)

"I call that man a cheat, and a great cheat too," he would say, "who gets money or goods out of some one by persuasion, and defrauds him;

「私ソクラテスは、誰かから説得によって金銭や物を受け取って、そうして、(そのまま、)だまして奪う人を『詐称者』、『大詐称者』と呼びます」とソクラテスはよく話した。

but of all imposters he surely is the biggest who can delude people into thinking that he is fit to lead the state, when all the while he is a worthless creature."

「しかし、常に無価値な奴にもかかわらず、人々をだまして『国家を指導する能力が有る』と思わせる事ができる人は、確実に、全ての詐称者のうち(有害さが)最大規模の詐称者なのです」
