Chapter One: What Is Pitch Accent? ピッチアクセントってなに？

　ピッチアクセントとは、日本語（にほんご）の音（おと）一（ひと）つ一（ひと）つにある音（おと）の高（たか）さのことで、アクセントが変（か）わるとちがう単語（たんご）になります。

　Pitch accent is the rise and fall of sounds that is used to differentiate words.

　例（たと）えば、ひらがな二（ふた）つの単語（たんご）なら、ひらがなのどちらかが高（たか）く発音（はつおん）されます。

For example, when pronouncing a word that consists of two Hiragana, one of the two will have to be pronounced higher than the other.

　箸（はし）　chopsticks　はし HIGH-low　高低

　橋（はし）　bridge　はし　low-HIGH　低高

　（以下、L = low H = high）

　「箸（はし）（chopsticks）」は「は」が「し」より高（たか）く、「橋（はし） （bridge）」は「し」が「は」より高（たか）いです。

The “ha” of 箸（はし chopsticks）is pronounced higher than the “shi” (= HA-shi, HL) whereas the “shi” of 橋（はし bridge） is pronounced higher than the “ha” (= ha-SHI, LH)

　英語（えいご）のword stressとも似（に）ていますが、日本語（にほんご）のピッチアクセントはイントネーションによって変（か）わることがありません。

Unlike word stress in English, Japanese pitch accent does not change depending on the intonation—the rise and fall of the voice in speaking.

　箸（はし）？ HA-shi　HIGH-low

　このとき、「箸（はし）（HL）？」を英語（えいご）のようにLHと読（よ）んでしまうと、「橋（はし）？（LH）」に聞（き）こえてしまいます。

If you pronounced 箸 (chopsticks)？（はし？ HIGH-low） with the rising intonation used in English, you would sound like you’re saying 橋 (bridge)？（はし？ low-HIGH）

◎ミニマル・ペア Minimal pair

　神（かみ）ＶＳ紙（かみ）

　神（かみ）　God, HIGH-low

　紙（かみ）　paper, low-HIGH

　英語（えいご）のように「紙（かみ） paper」を 高（たか）い・低（ひく）いという感（かん）じで読（よ）んでしまうと、「神（かみ） God」に聞（き）こえます。

If you pronouced 紙（かみ）(paper) as HIGH-low like you would in English, it would sound like 神（かみ）(God).
