第2話 Emerging

At the D Factory, CERN

“Raise the power much stronger.”

Howard’s shout is echoed in the monitor room. The PC monitor projects colorful visions like a kaleidoscope. It is the energy trace scanned by a calorimeter.

The LHC can accelerate protons by 99 percent of the light speed and make them collision with each other. Of course we cannot observe such small scale collisions directly. Instead a calorimeter detects the energy trace created by the collision.

“It’s impossible. Too dangerous.”

Steven, an assistant of Howard, shouted.

Howard Smith. He is the chief research officer of the Institute of Particle Physics of Harvard University. He joined in CERN with more than 100 delegations. He felt a big pressure for the research at CERN, because it has passed long time since USA got Nobel Prize in Physics last.

His main theme is the Super Gravity Theory, the most advanced area in the Super String, to give a clear answer to “Hierarchy Problem” which is the biggest problem in Cosmophysics.

Among 4 physical forces, namely Strong Force, Weak Force, Electromagnetic Force and Gravity, only the gravity is far smaller than other 3. The only way to answer this question would be to explore Black Hole. Because inside Black Hole the gravity becomes steeply stronger to infinity. It was prospected that the artificial Black Hole would be created by the proton colliding experiment at CERN. If it is really succeeded, then we can observe the collapse of Black Hole just before our eyes.

“Raise the power to 9 Tev (Tera electron volt). This experiment equipment is designed with 30 percentage of allowance. Then we can proceed to approximately 12 Tev.“

Howard shouted again and Steven unwillingly followed.

One month later. At cafeteria in CERN.

Outside windows the short summer of Switzerland has already been close to the end and autumn is creeping in. Kohei has been writing something in his notebook since morning for hours. A vacant coffee cup tells Kate passing times.

“Kohei, Hey, Kohei.”

“Wait, wait a moment. A little more.”

Kohei has devoted himself to some calculations since that event at the Sild See. He has sometimes been absent from the research labo and shut himself in his own room. What is he calculating? It is common for all theoretical physicists, but today Kate has something no longer waiting.

“Kohei, Ko…”

“Finished. I did it. It completed.”

Kohei shouted suddenly and tore the last page of his notebook. Kate found one equation scrawled on the paper.

“Kohei, what is this?”

“Extra Dimension. Yes, extra dimension. Remember that event at the Sild See. When the waterfowl dived into the water surface, its form completely disappeared.”

Kate nodded calmly.

“But a waterfowl did not actually disappear. It was under the water, not erased. It was in Extra Dimension. Yes, anti-matters did not disappear but were only isolated in Extra Dimension. That’s all. There could be the Parallel Universe which is totally made of only anti-matters.”

Kohei kept going at a breath.

“That means the Symmetry was not broken.”

“No, it wasn’t. It looked like being broken but actually keeping. Just matters and anti-matters were separated. Dark Energy is the very proof of isolated anti-matters. As you know only the energy can seep out from Extra Dimension.”

“G, great. If it’s true, the world of physics will be upset. But is there something…”

Kate didn’t easily agree to him. She is also one of major theoretical physicists. It is a daily happening in this world that the big discovery was not sometimes proved soon but reexamined far later.

“Yes, yes. Therefore I ask you for the review of my calculations, the most severe one.”

“OK, I will do it soon.”

“Sorry, it’s still messy. I will summarize and pass you tomorrow. By the way, what is your problem?”

Kohei finally looked at Kate’s face seriously.

“Yes, 2 days ago D Factory was closed.”

“What? Closed.”

“Yah, the official announce says there was some malfunction in the beaming device. But members of the American team are still permitted to access. Further the entrance is guarded by securities.”

“Securities? It’s not usual. Strange. Is there something wrong?”

Kate raised her hands with disappointed expression.

“How about the Home Page of the USA?”

“It has not been updated for a week.”

Kohei had a bad feeling about that, remembering his worst scenario.

At the same time, D Factory.

“Strange. It does not disappear. What’s going on?”

Howard looked into the monitoring screen and tapped the keypad. His shaggy beard and untrimmed hair told the length of passing time.

During several weeks of Kohei’s withdrawal, the American team had already achieved the amazing discovery. Artificial Black Hole. It came out when they raised the beam power at 11 Tev. Black Hole had evaporated as quickly as it emerged, as many physicists had prospected. The scale of Black Hole was the minus 30 power of 10 meters and its lifespan was as short as the minus 35 power of 10 seconds. Only the calorimeter could detect its creation and termination as the energy flows.

The American team did not open this achievement soon and continued their experiment to get more solid confirmation. But this caused the fatal mistake. One of Black Holes did not disappear and was gradually growing up to the minus 28 power of 10 meters within only 2 weeks.. Such result was really unexpected, but the Kohei’s new theory expected the Case and what will happen after that.

“Howard, give up. It seems useless. We should rather report to the Committee.”

“Never, the scale is still minus 28 power of 10 meters. Nobody can find it if we keep it secret. The government also directs us to make it confidential at the moment. Now the priority is how we can terminate it. Let’s try again with raising the beam power.”

One week later.

A big alarm echoed in the whole CERN.

“Emergency Warning, Emergency Warning, Radiation leaking occurred in D Factory. Repeating radiation…”

Bad event cannot be hidden.

Black Hole emits the strong X-ray to the vertical direction from its accretion disk. Inside Black Hole both matters and anti-matters are expected to be annihilated and exchanged into energy. Such energy would be very enormous and create a stream of X-ray. Actually at the center of the galaxy a super large scale Black Hole is existing and the strong gamma ray emitted from it is observed on the Earth. Even if Black Hole is very tiny, the X-ray should be emitted.

The D Factory was temporarily closed for the investigation. According to CERN’s regulation, when an accident occurs the LHC is stopped and the investigation should be done even if the accident is trivial.

3 days later.

“Why didn’t you report soon? What kind of experiment have you done at D Factory?”

Severe questions were uttered by members of the Investigation Committee. The Investigation Committee was urgently established in case of the serious violation of rules or the significant accident etc. It would be necessarily to confirm the peaceful utilization of CERN and safety. Such Committee has the strong authority which cannot be intervened by the participants’ government.

“Do you still keep silence?”

Both Howard and Steven had no words for hours. They were just obedient to the USA Government’s directions. It was obvious that there was some kind of intervenes by the Pentagon for their experiment.

“OK, you may go. We will do the on-site inspection tomorrow.”

The next day. D Factory.

Ten members of the Committee has gone into “Radiation Hazard Area”. All the members wore the protective clothing like a space suits with shield helmets. They cautiously entered the room step by step. Inside the room it seems very calm rather than expected. There seemed to be no fire nor explosion. Only quiet atmosphere was expanded.

One member who brings the Radioactivity Detector proceeds at the head. Other members are following to him through desks. Still no sign. They proceed further and approach to the monitor room.

Beeping.

“Radioactive Level 2”

The radioactivity detector reacted and everybody froze for an instance. But Level 2 is not fearful with a protective clothing. All the members sighed with relief.

The chief of the members slowly turned on the monitoring screen. Soon after that kaleidoscope like view was projected.

“What is this?”

“Is that an artificial Black Hole?”

“Impossible”

The Calorimeter indicated 40 Tev which was more than 3 times as high as which can be generated by CERN’s LHC.
