第138話 令和2年7月17日（金）鶴の恩返し

　こんにちは美優です。今日はママが私に童話を読んでくれました。

深沢涼香：美優。今日は鶴の恩返しを読んであげるからちゃんと聞いててね。

深沢美優：ウーウー。

　　　「鶴の恩返し」

　Long, long ago, in a small village, there lived a young man who was poor but had a kind heart.

むかしむかし、ある小さな村に貧しいけれども心のやさしい若者が住んでおりました。

One winter morning, the man went into town to sell the firewood he had gathered in the mountains.

ある冬の朝、若者は山で集めた薪を売りに町まで出かけました。

Along the way, he found a crane that was suffering because it was stuck in a trap in a rice field.

その途中、田んぼの中で､一羽の鶴が罠にかかって苦しんでいるのを見つけました。

The man felt sorry for the crane and set it free from the trap.

若者は、かわいそうに思って鶴を罠から逃がしてやりました。

When he did so, the crane flew around the man's head several times, crying happily, and then it flew away into the distant sky.

すると、鶴は嬉しそうに鳴きながら若者の頭上を何度も回った後、遠くの空へ飛んでいきました。

That evening it began to snow, and by night, the snow was very deep.

その日は、夕方から雪が降りはじめ、夜には深く降り積もりました。

"Knock, knock" ... came the sound of someone knocking on the front door.

トントン、トントン…誰かが表の戸をたたく音がします。

When the man strained to hear, he heard the voice of a young woman, saying, "Is anyone home? Please open the door."

耳を澄ますと「ごめんください。開けてください｡」という若い女性の声が聞こえます。

The man opened the door, and there was a young woman standing there whose head and clothes were all white with snow.

若者が戸を開けてみると、頭も着物も雪で真っ白になった若い娘が立っていました。

"I came to visit someone, but I've gotten lost," the woman said.

娘は「人を訪ねて来たのですが、道に迷ってしまいました｡」と言い、

"It's snowing, and night has fallen. With much effort, I've managed to come this far. Please kindly let me stay for the night," she asked.

「雪は降るし、日は暮れるし、やっとのことで、ここまでたどり着きました。どうか一晩泊めてください｡」と頼むのでした。

The man replied, "Oh, dear, you're in trouble. If a place like this is all right with you, do stay," and he graciously invited the young woman in.

若者は「それはお困りでしょう。こんな所で良かったら、どうぞお泊まりなさい｡」と答え、快く娘を招き入れました。

The two had dinner together, and then, warmed by the fire in the fireplace, they fell asleep.

二人は一緒に食事をとり、いろりの火で暖まって眠りにつきました。

The next morning, when the young man awoke, the woman had already gotten up.

あくる朝、若者が目を覚ますと、娘はすでに起きていました。

"In appreciation for your letting me spend the night, I've woven a roll of cloth for you. If you take it to town, I think you can fetch a high price for it," said the woman.

「泊めて頂いたお礼に反物を織りました。町に持っていけば、高く売れると思います｡」娘はそう言いました。

And she held out a roll of cloth that was light as a feather and more beautiful than anything the man had ever seen.

そして、羽のように軽く、これまで見たこともないほど美しい反物を差し出しました。

The man took it to town, and indeed, he was able to sell it for an incredibly high price.

若者がそれを町へ持っていくと、本当に驚くほど高い値段で売れたのでした。

The man and the woman lived well for a while on the money that the man received for the roll of cloth.

若者と娘は、反物を売ったお金でしばらくは良い暮らしを続けました。

But soon the money ran out, and the man asked the woman, "Could you weave us another roll of cloth?"

しかし、すぐにお金は無くなってしまい、若者は「また、あの反物を織ってくれないか？」と娘に頼んだのでした。

The woman answered, "OK, I'll do it. But you absolutely mustn't look at me when I am weaving the cloth."

娘は「分かりました、織りましょう。でも、私が反物を織っているところは絶対に覗かないで下さいね｡」と答えました。

And with that, she shut herself up in the room with the weaving loom.

そして、娘は機織り機の部屋に閉じこもりました。

The next morning, when the young woman came out of the room, she was holding another magnificent roll of cloth like the first one.

あくる朝、部屋から出てきた娘は、またあの素晴らしい反物を抱えていました。

The man took it to town, and he was able to sell it at an even higher price than before.

若者がそれを町に持っていくと、前よりももっと高い値段で売れました。

As they continued leading a comfortable life, though, the man began to wonder about the fact that the woman shut herself up in the room to do her weaving.

しかし、こうして良い暮らしを続けていくうちに、若者は娘が部屋に閉じこもって反物を織ることを不思議に思い始めました。

"I wonder how on earth she makes such wonderful fabric. I'll just take a little peek," thought the young man,

「いったいどうやって、あんなに見事な布を織っているんだろう？ 少しだけ、覗いてみよう｡」若者はそう考えて、

and he peeked through the cracks of the sliding door into the room where the woman was weaving.

娘が機織りをしている部屋を襖のすきまから覗いてみました。

When he did, it was not the woman there, but none other than a thin, frail crane.

すると、そこに居たのは娘ではなく、なんと痩せ細った一羽の鶴だったのです。

The crane was plucking its own feathers with its long beak, inserting them into the weaving loom, and weaving the roll of cloth.

その鶴が、長いくちばしで自分の羽毛を引き抜いては、機織り機にはさんで反物を織っていたのでした。

"It's the crane!" cried the man with surprise.

「鶴だ！」若者は驚いて、声を上げてしまいました。

The next morning, when the woman handed the roll of cloth to the man, she said,

あくる朝、娘は若者に反物を渡しながら、こう言いました。

"I am the crane that you helped one time. I wanted to return the favor, so I transformed myself into a woman and have lived with you until today. "

「私は、いつかあなたに助けていただいた鶴です。恩返しをしたいと思い、娘の姿になって今日まで一緒に暮らしてきました｡」

"But you have found out that I am a crane. Now, I must say goodbye. I wish you well."

「でも、あなたは私が鶴だということを知ってしまいました。もう、お別れです。どうか元気でいて下さい｡」

No sooner had she said this than the young woman changed in a flash into a crane, and soared up to the sky.

そう言ったかと思うと、たちまち娘は一羽の鶴になって空へ舞い上がりました。

The man chased after her with all his might, but the crane, crying sadly, flew off over the mountains.

若者は一生懸命追いかけましたが、鶴は悲しそうに嗚きながら山の向こうへ飛んで行ってしまいました。
