It's been exactly ten years since I hypothesized that rice cakes would originally mimic the shape of a heart, so I wrote this book to commemorate the occasion. Not because that assumption is now a certainty. I was only taking slow steps to explain it. In this way, except for Ban Kokei's invention on the significance of eating between meals, I only tried to think about what my predecessors had not yet figured out.

In the opening sentence, I make a rather hyperbolic argument. It was necessary to say this a decade ago.
