When I arrived at the tram stop, my childhood friend, Aoi-kun, who is a fellow trolleybus enthusiast, was there.
I prefer riding the trolleybus because I dislike SkyArk Taxis (personal drones), but Aoi-kun specifically chooses to ride the trolleybus because he simply enjoys transportation. It's as if he has some peculiar sense of camaraderie, although I personally don't think much of it.
"Good morning! It's a bit chilly, but the weather is nice. Perfect day for the trolleybus, don't you think?"
"Today 'too,' right, Aoi-kun?"
"Good morning, Gen-san!"
Gen-san is one of the few trolleybus drivers who hold a license for trackless trams. Trolleybuses only exist in Akashi City in Japan. It looks like he's finished attaching the trolley poles to the overhead wires.
"Hey there, miss. Just wait a moment longer."
My designated seat is the front solo seat on the left side. It has a great view ahead, and I also serve as a conversational partner for Gen-san.
Aoi also wants to sit in this seat, but I won't give it up.
In the end, Aoi sits in the seat one row behind.
"Inspection complete. You can hop on now, miss."
As I board, lively music and narration start playing, and beautiful scenery appears in my mind.
This is another reason why I love the trolleybus.
After a while, a slightly faded giant red octopus sculpture comes into view. It's the symbol of Octopus Station (formerly the Uo no Tana Shopping Street). Apparently, it was created by the former Mayor Matsura as an imitation of the Squid Station in Hokuriku about 20 years ago. Cars are being swallowed up since early morning; there's still so much liveliness today.
Tourists are sticking their heads out of the octopus and taking commemorative photos. The children are adorable.
We pass by the City Hall and arrive at the stop in front of the high school.
"Thank you, Gen-san."
"Yeah, take care, miss."
