This short story is a prototype for the “7th Charles (７番目のシャルル)” series of novels.

I translated this from my native Japanese into unfamiliar English, so there may be some strange wording. Please forgive me.

◆Preface（序文）

The story of an unfortunate Dauphin (crown prince) at the mercy of a bizarre fate.

The story before Jeanne d'Arc appeared.

The Hundred Years' War was in a state of truce, but King Charles VI of France went mad and his kingdom was in a state of civil war, and King Henry V of England became ambitious again.

With the deaths of his elder brothers in a row, Charles de Valois (later Charles VII), the youngest and fifth prince, became the crown prince of France (Dauphin de Viennois) at the age of 14 and was brought back to Paris, the royal capital.

Since his father was incapable of ruling, the Dauphin was the regent (deputy of the king).

The Dauphin was struggling at court with heavy responsibilities, but following attempts on his life by his mother, Queen Isabeau de Baviere of France and her lover, the Duke of Burgundy, he fled Paris.

The Dauphin asks the starry sky at the Château de Chinon, where he is on the run.

救国の英雄ジャンヌ・ダルクがあらわれる数年前。

百年戦争は休戦中だったが、フランス王シャルル六世の発狂で王国は内乱状態となり、イングランド王ヘンリー五世は再び野心を抱く。

兄王子たちの連続死で、末っ子で第五王子のシャルル・ド・ヴァロワ（のちのシャルル七世）は14歳でフランス王太子となり王都パリへ連れ戻された。

父王に統治能力がないため、王太子は摂政（国王代理）である。

重責を背負いながら宮廷で奮闘していたが、母妃イザボーと愛人ブルゴーニュ公に命を狙われ、パリを脱出した。

王太子は、逃亡先のシノン城で星空に問いかける。
