第1話 Essays in the Snow: The New Traffic
I feel like our new way of transportation was not yet completely in tune with the old world. For example, there is no other country in the world where trains run so frequently in a country with many snowy valleys and cliffs such as Japan.
in tune with......と調和して
It's been particularly bad again this year, with heavy winds and heavy snow burying the train somewhere almost every day, I would say. It's a very lonely season for those of us who have friends only in distant lands.
Nevertheless, people who could only half understand the normal life of the village, but who were interested in politics, reading and other interests that they did not have in common with their neighbors, were now dispersed and residing in the corners of the countryside. Apparently their mutual traffic routes are often hit by an invisible avalanche in the winter as well.

avalanche......(名)雪崩
For example, this early February Saturday in Tokyo was the first snowfall, and it shined in the shade of the pines and sawtooth oaks in the fields and mountains, brightening the light of the blue sky. The red and white plum blossoms are already scattered in the villages along the coast of Tosa from Awa. If you are someone who has long since left your cold hometown and stayed in a county like this, you can't remember rather than forget the view of blizzard country houses.

sawtooth oak......クヌギ

To define it in plain language, a friend is, in essence, a relationship to talk. But for about a third of the year, their stories run out of steam. Even if they don't disappear, they will be buried in the bottom of the snow, which means it is a traffic breakdown of sorts.

In Japan, there are many cases where a job started in a haphazard manner with the intention of imitating not only a train but also anything else, but later became an unexpected and serious experiment that was solved splendidly after they were helpless. The problem of companionship will surely be dealt with by now, but for now the imaginary planes and sympathetic buses I was counting on don't fly and are always delayed, so there is no way that the solitary and lofty individualism of the poems that make me admire them can't still be something like seeing an empty seat on the other side of the kotatsu.

I sometimes get a letter from a friend who lives in the Tohoku region that says he lives under the kotatsu with a newspaper as his friend every day. I wonder how long newspapers will be able to substitute for the unexpected visitor sitting across from the kotatsu. I'd like to think about this common problem with people in the snow, whom I can't meet, borrowing a few pages of newspaper to experiment with it.
