This old man had been living alone in the mountains for decades. He came from a good family, but when he exhausted his property in his youth, he gave up his society and built a hut on the pass and made his living by selling amazake* to passersby. The teamsters thought of him as a father and adored him. If he could afford a little income, he would come down to town and have a drink. He wears a short coat made of red blankets and a red hood, and when he gets drunk, he walks through the town with vigor, but the policemen don't pay any attention. When he was finally decrepit, he went back to his hometown and lived a pitiful life. All of his children went to Hokkaido and he was alone.
*amazake: A drink made from rice malt, rice and sake lees. The alcohol content is low.
