At another time, seeing Nicomachides on his way back from the elections (of magistrates), he asked him:

別の、ある時、ソクラテスは、(公職の)選挙から戻る途中のニコマキデスを見て、次のように、ニコマキデスに尋ねた。

Who are elected generals, Nicomachides?

「誰が将軍に選ばれたのですか？　ニコマキデスよ」

And he:

すると、次のようにニコマキデスは話した。

Is it not just like them, these citizens of Athens--

「いかにも彼ららしい！　いかにも都市国家アテナイ市民らしいではないか！」

just like them, I say-- to go and elect, not me,

「私ニコマキデスが『いかにも彼ららしい！』と言っているのは、選挙に行っても、この私ニコマキデスを選ばない事なのです！」

who ever since my name first appeared on the muster-roll have literally worn myself out with military service-- now as a captain, now as a colonel--

「(私ニコマキデスの)名前が兵員名簿に最初に載ってからずっと、今でも一指揮官として、私ニコマキデスは、文字通り、兵役で疲れ果てて(しまうほどアテナイ人のために尽くして)きました」

and have received all these wounds from the enemy, look you!

「私ニコマキデスが受けてきた、これらの傷は全て、敵からの物なのです！　見てください！」

(at the same time, and suiting the action to the word, he bared his arms and proceeded to show the scars of ancient wounds)--

(言葉と同時に、言葉に合った行動をして、ニコマキデスは腕をむき出して、古傷の傷跡を見せた。)

they elect not me (he went on), but, if you please, Antisthenes!

(次のようにニコマキデスは話を続けた。)「彼ら、アテナイ人は、この私ニコマキデスを選ばず、驚いた事に、アンティステネスを選んだのです！」

who never served as a hoplite in his life nor in the cavalry ever made a brilliant stroke, that I ever heard tell of;

「アンティステネスは、生涯で重装歩兵として貢献した事が一度も無いし、騎兵として異彩を放つ手腕を発揮した事が一度も無いし、私ニコマキデスは、『アンティステネスは騎兵として異彩を放つ手腕を発揮した事が有る』とアンティステネスについて話されているのを聞いた事が一度も無い」

no!

「無いのです！」

in fact, he has got no science at all, I take it, except to amass stores of wealth.

「『実際、アンティステネスは、富を蓄える以外は、全く知識が無い』と私ニコマキデスは思っています」

But still (returned Socrates), surely that is one point in his favour--

(次のようにソクラテスは言い返した。)「しかし、やはり、確かに、それ(、富を蓄える知恵が有るの)は、アンティステネスに有利な点の一つです」

he ought to be able to provide the troops with supplies.

「アンティステネスは、軍隊に補給物資を供給する事ができるはずである」

Nic.

次のようにニコマキデスは話した。

Well, for the matter of that, merchants are good hands at collecting stores;

「ええ、そういう事に関しては、商人は富を蓄えるのが上手いです」

but it does not follow that a merchant or trader will be able to command an army.

「しかし、その結果、『商人は軍隊を指揮できる』という事には成らないのです」

But (rejoined Socrates) Antisthenes is a man of great pertinacity, who insists on winning, and that is a very necessary quality in a general.

(次のようにソクラテスは言い返した。)「アンティステネスは、勝利を求める、大いなる不屈の忍耐力が有る人で、これ(、勝利を求める忍耐力)は、将軍に、とても必要な資質である」

Do not you see how each time he has been choragos he has been successful with one chorus after another?

「『アンティステネスは、合唱隊の指導者に成ると毎回、次々と合唱隊を成功させてきた』のをあなたニコマキデスは、どう思いますか？」

Nic.

次のようにニコマキデスは話した。

Bless me!

「神よ！」

yes;

「ええ」

but there is a wide difference between standing at the head of a band of singers and dancers and a troop of soldiers.

「しかし、歌手達や踊り子達の集団の指導者として立つ事と、兵士達の軍隊の指導者として立つ事には、大きな違いが有るのです」

Soc.

次のようにソクラテスは話した。

Still, without any practical skill in singing or in the training of a chorus, Antisthenes somehow had the art to select the greatest proficients in both.

「それでも、歌や合唱の教育の実務経験による全ての技術無しに、どういうわけか、アンティステネスには、最高の熟練者を選び出す事ができる技術が有りました」

Nic.

次のようにニコマキデスは話した。

Yes, and by the same reasoning we are to infer that on a campaign he will find proficients, some to marshal the troops for him and others to fight his battles?

「ええ、では、『同様の理由によって、軍事行動中に、アンティステネスは、熟練者を見出す事ができて、ある熟練者達はアンティステネスのために軍隊を配置でき、他の、ある熟練者達はアンティステネスの戦争を戦う事ができる』と推測できるでしょうか？」

Soc.

次のようにソクラテスは話した。

Just so.

「まさに、そう推測できます」

If in matters military he only exhibits the same skill in selecting the best hands as he has shown in matters of the chorus, it is highly probable he will here also bear away the palm of victory;

「合唱隊の事において示したように、軍事的な事においてアンティステネスが同様に最高の手腕を持つ人達を選び出す事ができる技術を示すだけで、アンティステネスが、ここ(、軍事)でも勝利を勝ち取るのは、大いに有り得るでしょう」

and we may presume that if he expended so much to win a choric victory with a single tribe, he will be ready to expend more to secure a victory in war with the whole state to back him.

「また、『アンティステネスは、唯一の一族と共に、合唱の勝利を勝ち取るために、とても多額の金銭を使ったので、アンティステネスを(将軍として)支持してくれた国家全体と共に、戦争での勝利を確実にするために、より多額の金銭を使う用意が有るだろう』と推測できます」

Nic.

次のようにニコマキデスは話した。

Do you really mean, Socrates, that it is the function of the same man to provide efficient choruses and to act as commander-in-chief?

「『同一の人の唯一の機能が、有能な合唱隊と、指揮官、将軍としての働きをもたらす』と本当に言うつもりですか？　ソクラテスよ」

Soc.

次のようにソクラテスは話した。

(*Version A: )I mean this, that, given a man knows what he needs to provide, and has the skill to do so, no matter what the department of things may be-- house or city or army--you will find him a good chief and director of the same.(*Version B: I mean this, that, given a man knows what he needs to provide, and has the skill to do so, no matter what the department of things may be-- house or city or army--you will find him a good chief and representative of the same.)

「『供給する必要が有るものを知っている人に、そうするための技術が有れば、家、都市国家、軍隊といった、どんな分野でも、同様に、その人は優れた指導者である、と分かる』と私ソクラテスは言いたいのです」

Then Nicomachides:

すると、次のようにニコマキデスは話した。

(*Version A: )Upon my word, Socrates, I should never have expected to hear you say that a good housekeeper and steward of an estate would make a good general.(*Version B: Upon my word, Socrates, I should never have expected to hear you say that a good economist and steward of an estate would make a good general.)

「(神に)誓って、ソクラテスよ、あなたソクラテスが『家政に優れた者や、優れた財産管理人は、優れた名将に成れる』と言うのを、私ニコマキデスが聞く事に成るとは決して予想できませんでした」(「神に誓って、ソクラテスよ、あなたソクラテスが『優れた経済学者や、優れた財産管理人は、優れた名将に成れる』と言うのを、私ニコマキデスが聞く事に成るとは決して予想できませんでした」※別の版)

Soc.

次のようにソクラテスは話した。

Come then, suppose we examine their respective duties, and so determine whether they are the same or different.

「では、私ソクラテスと、あなたニコマキデスで、(商人と、将軍の、)それぞれの務めを調べて、それらが同様であるか違うかを明らかにしてもよいですが」

Nic.

次のようにニコマキデスは話した。

Let us do so.

「そうしましょう」

Soc.

次のようにソクラテスは話した。

Well then, is it not a common duty of both to procure the ready obedience of those under them to their orders?

「ええ、では、命令に対する部下からの忠誠をすぐに手に入れる事は、(商人と、将軍の、)両方に共通する務めではありませんか？」

Nic.

次のようにニコマキデスは話した。

Certainly.

「確かに」

Soc.

次のようにソクラテスは話した。

And also to assign to those best qualified to perform them their distinctive tasks?

「では、特有の務めを成し遂げるための能力が有る最高の人達に担当させる事も、(商人と、将軍の、)両方に共通する務めではありませんか？」

That, too, belongs to both alike (he answered).

(次のようにニコマキデスは答えた。)「それも、同様に、両方に共通する物ですね」

Soc.

次のようにソクラテスは話した。

Again, to chastise the bad and reward the good belongs to both alike, methinks?

「さらに、『悪い人を罰して懲らしめ、優れている善い人に報いる事は、同様に、(商人と、将軍の、)両方に共通する物である』と私ソクラテスには思われますが？」

Nic.

次のようにニコマキデスは話した。

Decidedly.

「確かに」

Soc.

次のようにソクラテスは話した。

And to win the kindly feeling of their subordinates must surely be the noble ambition of both?

「では、部下からの思いやりの気持ちを勝ち取る事は、確実に、(商人と、将軍の、)両方に共通する気高い野心であるはずですね？」

That too (he answered).

(次のようにニコマキデスは答えた。)「それも、そうですね」

Soc.

次のようにソクラテスは話した。

And do you consider it to the interest of both alike to win the adherence of supporters and allies?

「では、『味方からの支持を勝ち取るのは、同様に、(商人と、将軍の、)両方の利益と成る』と考えますか？」

Nic.

次のようにニコマキデスは話した。

Without a doubt.

「疑い無く」

Soc.

次のようにソクラテスは話した。

And does it not closely concern them both to be good guardians of their respective charges?

「では、(富や部下や農場などと、兵士、部下という、)それぞれの世話をする対象にとっての善良な守護者であるべき事は、(商人と、将軍の、)両方に密接に関係していますか？」

Nic.

次のようにニコマキデスは話した。

Very much so.

「とても大いに、そうです」

Soc.

次のようにソクラテスは話した。

Then it equally concerns them both to be painstaking and prodigal of toil in all their doings?

「では、行うべきである全ての事で労を惜しまず労苦するべきである事は、(商人と、将軍の、)両方に等しく関係しますね？」

Nic.

次のようにニコマキデスは話した。

Yes, all these duties belong to both alike,

「ええ、これらの全ての務めは、同様に、(商人と、将軍の、)両方に共通する物です」

but the parallel ends when you come to actual fighting.

「しかし、実際の現実の戦いに至ると、(商人と、将軍の、)類似は終わりを迎えます」

Soc.

次のようにソクラテスは話した。

Yet they are both sure to meet with enemies?

「しかし、(商人と、将軍の、)両方共、敵対者達と戦う事は確実ですよね？」

Nic.

次のようにニコマキデスは話した。

There is no doubt about that.

「敵対者達と戦う事は、疑い無く、(商人と、将軍に、)存在しますね」

Soc.

次のようにソクラテスは話した。

Then is it not to the interest of both to get the upper hand of these?

「では、敵対者達を圧倒する事は、(商人と、将軍の、)両方に共通する利益ではありませんか？」

Nic.

次のようにニコマキデスは話した。

Certainly;

「確かに」

but you omit to tell us what service organisation and the art of management will render when it comes to actual fighting.

「しかし、実際の現実の戦いに至った時に、軍隊の組織と、経営の技術が何をもたらすかを、あなたソクラテスは故意に教えていませんよね」

Soc.

次のようにソクラテスは話した。

Why,

「何だって」

it is just then, I presume, it will be of most service,

「まさに、その(戦いの)時に、多分、最も役に立ちます」

for the good economist knows that nothing is so advantageous or so lucrative as victory in battle, or to put it negatively, nothing so disastrous and expensive as defeat.

「なぜなら、優れた経済学者は、『戦いでの勝利と同じくらい有益な物は無いし、逆に、敗戦と同じくらい悲惨で大損な物は無い』と知っているからである」

He will enthusiastically seek out and provide everything conducive to victory,

「優れた経済学者は、勝利の助けと成る全てのものを熱心に探求して供給してくれるだろう」

he will painstakingly discover and guard against all that tends to defeat,

「優れた経済学者は、敗戦に役立ってしまう全てのものを、労を惜しまず発見して予防してくれるだろう」

and when satisfied that all is ready and ripe for victory he will deliver battle energetically,

「そして、満足に全てのものを用意して勝利への用意を整えた時に、優れた経済学者は、精力的に戦うだろう」

and what is equally important, until the hour of final preparation has arrived, he will be cautious to deliver battle.

「そして、それと等しく重要なのは、(戦いに勝利するための)用意が終わりに達する時まで、優れた経済学者は、戦わないように用心する事である」

Do not despise men of economic genius, Nicomachides;

「経済の天才である人を見下すなかれ、ニコマキデスよ」

the difference between the devotion requisite to private affairs and to affairs of state is merely one of quantity.

「私事に必要な献身と、国事に必要な献身には、規模という唯一の違いしか無いのです」

For the rest the parallel holds strictly, and in this respect pre-eminently, that both are concerned with human instruments:

「私事に必要な献身と、国事に必要な献身は、規模以外は、類似は密接であるし、『両方共、人の手段に関係している』という、この点において類似は顕著である」

which human beings, moreover, are of one type and temperament, whether we speak of devotion to public affairs or of the administration of private property.

「さらに、公事、国事への献身について言ってみても、私有財産の管理について言ってみても、人々の型や性質は唯一なのである(、と言える)」

To fare well in either case is given to those who know the secret of dealing with humanity,

「(私事と、国事の、)どちらの場合でも、人を扱うための秘訣を知っている人達は、上手くやっていく事ができる」

whereas the absence of that knowledge will as certainly imply in either case a fatal note of discord.

「逆に、(私事と、国事の、)どちらの場合でも、同様に確実に、人を扱うための知識の不足は、不和の致命的な要素を必ず伴ってしまう」
