Prologue

In a small corner of Soweto, there lived a boy who spent most of his days wishing the impossible was real. Magic, supernatural powers, worlds beyond imagination—none of it existed around him. In reality, he was just another teenager, and in that reality, people never understood him.

Whenever he talked about anime or games, others laughed and called him crazy, as if liking those things meant living in a fantasy country. Their words stung, but he had learned to keep quiet, letting the anger sit deep inside. Sometimes the world felt unbearably heavy… yet he always remembered one thing: he wasn’t truly alone. He had friends who treated him better than the people who mocked him. Because of that, he refused to change who he was.

That boy’s name was Finne Mathevula, a fifteen-year-old South African teen.

Every afternoon after school, he would rush home, excited to dive into another episode of anime. Meals were often forgotten because nothing came before the world of his favorite shows.

One night, after his uncle asked him to buy bread at the tuckshop, Finne stepped outside with his headphones on, listening to anime music as he walked. The streets were quiet. When he reached the four-way intersection, he let himself relax, humming along with the song and stepping lightly across the empty road.

At the same time, far down the street, a BMW M3 approached. The driver, unfocused and unsteady, tried to show off with sharp turns, losing control of the car. By the time he realized someone was on the road, it was already too late.

A bright light filled Finne’s vision. For a moment, he mistook it for people carrying a giant torch. Then the wind roared toward him—fast, powerful, unstoppable.

Everything went silent.

Finne felt himself lifting off the ground, his thoughts blurring. Pain spread through his body, but even that felt distant.

“…So this is it,” he whispered to himself. “After everything… maybe my story ends here.”

Memories of his friend Junior flashed in his mind—laughter, shared moments, the kind of warmth he wished he felt more often. His eyes grew heavy as the sounds of the world faded away.

With a slow exhale, Finne let the darkness take him.
