洋紅色（ようこうしょく）

『洋紅色（ようこうしょく）とは、深く鮮やかな紅赤色のことです。別に『ようべに』とも読まれるとおり、江戸後期に西洋から伝わった『紅色』のことで洋名は『カーマイン』。

カーマインは、メキシコのサボテンに寄生するコチニール（カイガラムシの一種）の雌から得られる紅色の色素で、江戸後期にオランダ経由で輸入され、絵の具や化粧品、食品の着色料にと現代でも幅広く使われています。

コチニールの別名を『臙脂虫えんじむし』といいますが、その名のとおり『臙脂色えんじいろ』の元になっています。『臙脂色』はより暗く深みがある色ですが、古くからの伝統色『臙脂色』と明治の文化人に流行したハイカラな『洋紅色』にカーマインという共通項があるというのもじつに面白いものです。』
